Difficulty, Experience, and Multiplay

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:03 pm

After re-watching one of Brink's promo videos, it occurred to me that there may be some difficulty with balancing the experience gained in singpleplayer with the experience gained in multiplayer.

Let's review what we know:

One of the largest selling points of Brink so far has been there integrated single/multi player gaming experience.
There are distinct advantages to getting experience and levels (you unlock heavy and light body types at levels 5 and 7 in that order, not to mention huge amounts of customization options).
Your character, with all experience earned, can switch between online and offline totally unaffected, and brings all their experience with them.

With this in mind, I was wondering if anyone knew if there are difficulty settings for singleplayer. If there are not, how does Splash Damage plan on making Brink enjoyable for all levels of gamers?

And if there are, what measures will be in place to stop everyone from playing on easy until they have all the experience they need, and then going online once they have all the stuff they want?

Games such as Halo have gotten around this issue by making credit earnings much higher online, but all promos about Brink I've seen have made it very clear that the only difference between online and offline is that there are real people instead of AIs playing.

Conundrum!

There are difficulty settings, and I would imagine that if you went online after playing only on easy, you would be DESTROYED. And what's the point, really? you've already levelled up, so why would you continue to play as that character? I don't imagine it would be very rewarding.

There are four level brackets: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20.
In addition to a general difficutly setting, bots will act more intelligent in higher brackets.

We actually had a discussion about http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1173190-will-brink-become-the-game-of-the-year/.

And no, BRINK will most likely not become the GotY. And it's rather unlike to become Shooter GotY either.

Yep, it has to go against these titles:
Gears of War 3
Modern Warfare 3 (BOOOO)
Battlefield 3 (what's with all the 3?)
Warhammer 40k Space Marine
Dead Space 2
Assassins Creed 3

Back on topic:
Chances are that if you became a level 20 by playing on easy, you'd svck in multiplayer matchmaking.

Haha, I don't mind the interruption at all. So the consensus is that although it is possible to level up very quickly, get all the gear, perks, and body types you want, that it still won't matter because the people who choose to do that will svck at playing online because they will be soft? I guess that's a possibility, but personally I think I'm going to be annoyed when someone who has much less experience than I do has a completely perfected character that I cannot have for a long time because I'm playing on hard.

Anyway, that's just my personal opinion. I mostly created this thread to see if there was anything I was missing, and apparently there is not.

Well, they could level up completely and then train against the hardest difficulty bots to become awsome but I doubt many people would do that.

You would think they would give XP based upon the level of difficulty you are playing. The lower the level of difficulty the less points for XP for same execution of actions that would give you more XP on higher difficulty.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine

That one will really become a niche game for Warhammer fans, I believe. A "Gears of War-hammer".

I hope it'll be quality, though, because I love the Warhammer universes.

also I agree - power leveling will get you absolutely nowhere

EDIT: I got semi- :ninja:'d

Killzone 3

And someone beat me to it as well haha.

I don't think KZ3 is competition for anything tbh though, but I'm not going to get into the reasons for why as I would need an entire thread for that lol.

Why is there no love for KZ3? Was it really that bad of a game?

You haven't played it?

I'll give you the gist of why I think so (in my opinion obviously): You are supposed to improve upon aspects of your previous game in sequels, not remove 3/4 of the features that most people loved. Basically, it is a broken, and unfinished game.

haha you're right

and it seems like people really hate killzone's multiplayer, though I'm not sure why as I've never played it (no PS3)

Don't get me wrong, I love the Killzone franchise, KZ1, and KZ2s MP were both great imo. KZ2 is actually my favourite MP game this generation. KZ3 though, is just horrible imo, both SP, and MP...
