I have been playing around with overhual and combat mods for the past 2 weeks now and could use some help with a problem that keeps cropping up.
The mods I have used for gameplay so far are deadly dragon, revenge of the enemies, immersive creatures, skyrim unleashed, Skyre, Ace combaat, deadly cpmbat, duel realism combat, requiem and SPERG.
Deadly dragons, revenge of the enemies, and immersive creatures have worked great for my variety of enemies and fighting but has not added much difficulty. These 3 have just served to make fights enjoyable.
Skyrim unleashed, Skyre, and Ace combat all seem to have the same problem crop up with difficuty ping pong. What I mean is I can go an entire hour or so exploring and then it's a slew of one shots. The delevled zones of skyrim unleashed and skyre actually seem to discourage exploring as you may get an entirely managable instance and then the boss is invulnerable. For examply just today using SU I cleared an entire falmer cave, got to the end and was one shot by a gloom lurker/centurion combo. Ok fine I isolate the falmer who again can kill me in 1 hit, but I run him around and finally kill him. Then the centurious 1 shots me with steam. These scenrios then proceed to happen oer and over again in every dungeon I go to. I try to quest for money and gear yet every time I actually get on a role things go from fair to god mode. This can happen the other way around as well like in SKyre or ACE. You hit a gear benchmark and then every thing dies in 2 swings.
It has become very hard to guage difficulty when everything up until the final fight is impossible or even worse I am just exploring outside and have all of my progress slashed away because of a god mode encounter.
Deadly combat and duel have been hit and miss with me because they clearly seem designed for sword and shield play. Two handed is an absolute chore to fight with with these mods so much so I had been forced to cheese the one mechanic that slipped in which is 40% knockdown chance. Blocking just was not smooth with two handed fighting nor did the massive stamina penalties equate to the damage being delt from a two hander. Deadly also didn't register stagger on normal attacks when I used it for whatever reason.
Requiem for the short time I played it seemed like a chore. Literally everything seemed to be made a struggle for the sake of it.
Lastly SPERG is a lot of fun, but can lead to being overpowered fast. Actually reading the discussion it seems the modder responible for SPERG intended it this way and said it was to be balanced by other combat mods aviable through the community. The leveling is ingenius. No more farming mudcrabs for armor ranks or other pointless grinds. Just about every skill level at a decent pace with alternatives that have you doing instead of just sitting there. The perk tree also makes sure every skill scales and magic stays relevant(lots of great perks)
So that's my experience. What combinations do you use to give yourself a challenging experience that doesn't go overboard? I am thinking of trying to balance something with SPERG to ge tthe gameplay just right.
