Difficulty slider?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:19 am

We all know Oblivion' level scaling was horrible. But the fact that I can pause the game and put the difficulty slider all the way to the left and make the game an utter joke was even worse. I rather have it at easy, medium or Hard at the most. I mean moving the slider all the way to the left made the game beyond easy. I would swing my sword once and enemies were dead in an instant.

I just hope Skyrim doesn't let you control the difficulty with such percision this time around. The way it was set up in Fallout 3 and New Vegas was perfect.

I can agree but for some people they might just need it :)

Well I thought to myself one day OH im going to play oblvion on hard on a new game, picked a good class etc and got absolute battered. The option to allow you to alter the difficulty is very good, if there is a hardcoe option then have this removed and stuck on a solid hard difficulty otherwise leave it in.

oblivion difficulty slider had to much effect and had no set levels, believe fallout 3 had 5 levels and 5-7 settings would work better. Morrowind and Oblivion had the problem that you could easy create a character who was hard to play, Fallout 3 was hard if you didn't raise repair and did not find the good weapons.

OMG yes, how dare they let us adjust the difficulty of the game when everyone plays at exactly the same skill level and has exactly the same preferences!

Wait...is this a joke? Er...I mean, is it intended to be a joke?

No its not a joke. I dont see any other games on the market let you control the difficulty like you can in Oblivion. It took a lot of the joy of playing for me knowing that I can move the slider all the way to the left and own everything in the game.

i dont mind making difficulty levels cause I know everyones play style is different but just dont make it so extreme.

Unlike in Fallout (where I play on hard/very hard ) i never could play oblivion or Morrowind on over normal difficulty, so I like the idea of the slider. Once I set it, I tend to leave it there.

So, the game should be tailored strictly for those whose skill is within the range you deem acceptable, and to hell with everyone else. Got it.

Maybe we should cut out that annoying console command thing - and who needs that construction set? It's all just temptation!

Removing the difficulty slider? That's one of the most stupid ideas I've read in a while. Why should an option be removed just because you don't have the willpower to not use it?

The only think that should be changed is what the difficulty slider does. The slider should affect AI, spawn rates and maybe level scaling, not enemy damage and health.

haha..you seem very defensive about this. Just give the game a easy, medium and hard option. I mean moving that slider to the left made the game MORE then easy...if you tap someone or something it would die on the spot.

I wouldn't know what that slider does, as I've never touched it.

I'm all for a "Casual, Medium, Hard" difficulty selector. I agree that the slider they gave in Oblivion, made it either too easy or too hard IMO.

I agree with the thread maker. It's wrong to be able to change difficulty on the fly. Week minded individuals like me will exploit it to cheat past difficult enemies. :banghead:

Choose difficulty at the start of a new character but make it permanent from there.

Yea exactly. I admit...I am weak minded when it comes to things like this. Especialy since I don't have that much time to game so if I run into a challenge in the game I will move the slider to the left and BAM...move on. That svcks in my opinion.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I often find myself changing the slider if I can't defeat an enemy. If I had to choose one difficulty and be stuck with it, then I would have a lot more fun and be getting more out of it.

perhaps he need a http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Generic_Magic_Apparel#Fortify_Willpower,

Would prefer that the difficulty only increased and decreased enemy damage, not your own. Main issue with difficulty was that enemies took to long to kill not that they was to dangerous.

I don't think it should be removed, it would be nice to get an achievement or something if you complete the game on the very hard difficulty without altering it.

I completely agree. Enemies with tons of HP are not the best way to make a game difficult...

So what's the difference of me turning down the difficulty all the way to the left and making the game easy?

Not a whole lot

IIRC you could change the difficulty on the fly in Fallout 3 too so I'm not exactly sure what the complaint is about the difficulty slider other than it being a slider.

Odd, I could adjust finitely to the scale of challenge my character would face.
I built some very poor builds that on normal would've got trashed in seconds, however on the lowest setting offered no risk due to my own skill at the game.
So with tweaking I could adjust it to the perfect setting, and as the PC gained skills, items and spells move the slider up to match that rise exactly.

Some others were uber powerful but max setting would have just annoyed me, so I could scale up untill it felt right.
Then when every blasted npc leveled up 1 for 1 to my level 30 could bring about a setting that made them less damage sponges.

So more choice = good imo.

This seems to be the core complaint, from what I can tell. Don't get it, if I found the difficulty adjustment mechanism too difficult to fathom and use effectively I'd just svck it up and admit that the rest of the game was most likely waaaaaaay over my head.

Difficulty slider doesn't need to be removed what it affects needs to be changed. Rather than increasing/lowering npc hit points and raising/lowering pc damage resistance(that is all it did in OB) it needs to leave the player alone and alter the level spread used in leveling. the higher the slider the higher the level of npc's spawn.

Example:
At Easy difficulty NPCs may scale up as high as 5 levels above the player
At normal difficulty NPCs may scale up as high as 15 levels above the player
At Hard difficulty NPCs may scale up as high as 30 levels above the player

It should not be proactive though so changing the slider has no effect on your current spawns.

Ultimately though it really doesn't matter to me as I have never once touched the slider in any Beth game.
