Digital optical audio

The bad news: my regular viewsonic 28" monitor died today.

The good news: It is under warranty, but will take a few weeks to get back from RMA, so in the meantime I have my computer hooked up to my TV a Panasonic 48" plasma.

I spent some time fiddling with settings and though I can watch High def movies in 1080 and all that on my TV my computer will on accept max resolution of 1920x1080 (not1200) probably screen size issue, but not sure. This caused crashes when trying to load both Oblivion and Fallout3 and had to go into the launcher for each game and reset resolution to lower than 1920x1200 - so the games load and look good, but no audio.

I am using an optical audio cable to my amplifier (because that is what I use in the living room with the TV - where I normally game I use headphones ). I don't have component cables for audio at this time. I did make sure to set the optical audio out as the default in my OS. tested other system sounds - all seems OK.

But I can't get any noise while in game with either Oblivion or Fallout3. The launchers play their music but nothing in game. I have steam and more games on it than a guy my age should own probably and other than Gothic3 (which was modded) they all seem to work fine and play sounds and everything.

So it is mainly these games - are they incompatible with that kind of audio?
Are there ini settings I can do to make this work?
Both games are heavily modded but I doubt that is the issue - or is it?

Thanks for any help

I tried a few channel settings in the ini for audio channels - the same no noise.

Ah well - headphones it is then.
