Direct2Drive incompatibilities?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 10:08 am

Hi all, been looking to buy Fallout 3 for a while now, and D2D is having a nice sale on it this week, I saw a couple of old posts around the internet that the script extender might not work with the d2d version. Is this still true, or has a fix been found? If I got this version, would I be missing out on a lot of good mods, or just some specialised ones that aren't that essential? Any other restrictions I should know about? Is it just D2D that has this problem?

Thanks for your input, M

The D2D version has some kind of protection on the .exe that won't allow things like FOSE to work, making you unfortunately miss out on a lot of good mods. There are ways to get around this issue however, one of which I'm not entirely sure I can discuss openly (however technically you DO own the game but I'm still cautious to say). The other might be to actually re-install the 1.7 patch manually. It should overwrite the .exe (the cause of the incompatability) and allow you to use FOSE. Let's just say the other method has to do with something similar to what the patch does but the legality of it is questionable.

D2D is not supported because it encrypts the Fallout3.exe

So can anyone confirm that if I re-downloaded the 1.7 patch onto the d2d version it would work o.k? I would have thought that would be a kind of well known fix if it's true?

In theory it should work but I can't say for certain. I'd wait to at least have someone else confirm that the method works.

Bethesda's patches only contain deltas from previous versions of the exes, so you would need to start with an unprotected exe for the patch to work. (in other words, running the patch on a d2d install would not fix the problem).
