Directions are in... i think

Post » Sat Jul 10, 2010 2:17 am

According to Xbox360world, directions are in. In thier demo they reported that after accepting the quest to find the dragon claw. It says:

"Camilla leads you to thr edge of town, pointing out landmarks and talking the whole time. These walk-and-talks are new too, a far smoother way of delivering exposition."

I'm not sure what this means, but to it's kinda of saying that she tells you what way to go, and this is a new way of how to get somewhere, instead of the compass pointing you.

What do you think?

I just hope there isn't too much hand-holding. I actually LIKE discovering a place.

Interesting and all, but it's still only one incident- thus not necessarily prrof that it's done that way throughout the game. Could easily be one particular scripted quest. Here's hoping it is indeed "the way it's done," but until I get the game in my hot little hands and see it for myself it's "Cool unbelievable Radiant AI we're going to have in Oblivion" hype all over again. Been burned before, once bitten twice shy, and so on.

Same. To me hand holding is the game playing me, not me playing the game.

I think this is more of an isolated incident rather than a common thing. I'm sure we'll see it sometimes, but it won't be common enough to get rid of the quest markers.

I believe in, and hope for, this being true.

It can be fun to drudge through the wilderness of a game, but I don't like having to constantly jump between the game screen and a damn journal to fumble through the pages to find the relevant journal entry to read some cryptic message that says "When you leave town going south, go over 2 bridges then take the road to the east and cross another bridge, then go north up a passage to find the entrance to the dungeon."

The magic "know-all' quest markers were much better than the navigation "system" of Morrowind.

Just sayin'.

It's been mentioned before. They said quest npcs will often give you directions if they like you enough.

Isn't the idea of exploration is that you find places you didn't know where they were.

Wouldn't giving directions and showing it on the map ruin it the same way?

It sounds interesting and enjoyable. After all, If I was sending someone to get a relic of mine, I'd do my best to get them in the right direction.

You guys act as though NPCs will point out every single location on the map. NPCs would point out a few select locations on your map in Morrowind and Oblivion too.

Yea, but remember, this was a quest where the NPC knows where their artificat is and wants you to retrieve it. You're doing them a favor, so it makes sense for her to walk with you to the edge of town and give directions.

@Daydark Exactly.

I was actually wonderin about this myself after reading that article. I'm actually excited about this, it reminds me of how morrowind told you how to get to places and it ties in well with that quote from Todd about how they want to add that sense of discovery back in.

Actually that's a misunderstanding.

Exploration requires that you have no specific goal. Meaning that when you explore, you simple look whats around the next corner, uncovering the land, unlike searching, or tracking, where you have a specific goal, and are looking for a specific place.

I wish there was an option to turn the compass off entirely. I'm on a 360, so I can't mod it out.

To me it seems like this may be the replacement for compass markers, at least I really really hope so.

I'm pretty sure one of the questions they'll answer in the fan interview will be about quest markers. I thought they were already confirmed though? We know the compass is already there.

When I played Oblivion I always had my active quest as a fight at the Arena. That way markers never gave anything away. There really needs to be an option to turn these off entirely.

I know the compass is in which is fine, but I like the idea of people giving you directions to important places which is more realistic and imersive than automatically knowing where everything is in a land you've never been to before. So I'm just hoping that they use this system instead of the markers.

Very true. I like this a lot. However, I don't think it takes away from the immersion if an NPC says, "here, let me mark the location on your map". I don't mind having a quest marker to tell me where to go. Its once I'm inside of a place (cave, ruin, etc.) that I don't want more quest markers to show me exactly who to talk to or what to pick up.

Ya that's true, I just liked how in morrowind when I followed the directions to a place I felt a huge sense of accomplishment when I got to the place I was looking for, that sense wasn't there at all in OB.

I think grids on a large map would be good, so like instead of a marker saying HERE, yes right here, take a look on your mini map as well I have clearly marked it!

You get a grid over the map and the squares around the area you want are highlighted in red. This way you still get to explore with out knowing exactly where your going but you don't have any of those "Damn it! It was the other red cliff house" and then you rely on detailed quest scripts to say "It was next to a brown door with a lion head knocker" then there's no "Boloxs I went through the wrong door and had to fight 25 Minotaur lords".

And a 100% accurate Global positioning system that's used to direct the player isn't?

I'll take directions over the compass any day of the week.
