2011 AAA title should have the latest DirextX support. What do you think?

I'm gonna randomly say no, because denying people advantage with absolutely no downside is amusing to both me and game developers.

Let's just say that I'd be shocked if it was DX9 only.

Sure, why not?

I mean, if you don't have a video card that doesn't support 10 or 11, you can still play the game in 9, I'm sure. It'll still look good.

As much as I'd love to see it, the devs developing the game on Windows XP (which is DX9) indicates otherwise.

Of course. It will fall FAR behind the visual standard if it doesnt. Simply things PC gamers expect. It will make the game run faster on lower end hardware AND for the high end provide a visual feast unmatched. Was looking in my Game Informer and the screen they posted today, game desperatley needs two things on the PC..
1. SSAO, look at the town near the waterfall. Its in dire need.
2. Tessellation. Scene is incredibly poly starved. As well as all the other screens I saw.

Would be nice. Pretty low down on my checklist, though... even though I have a card that supports it.

Screenshot looks pretty good, waterfall could maybe use more coolness but maybe it looks more real when it's animated. Apparently all objects have a dynamic shadow and distant land is handled better, that's really all the improvement I wanted graphics-wise.

Where did you hear that?

Anyway, I'm going to be getting an expensive PC just for this game so I do hope it supports DX11.

Developing on, or developing for?

Probably both, in this case. I mean why not still have support for an OS that MANY still use (it still outnumbers W7 users by quite a bit)?

But mostly on.

If you watch the video of the tour of Bethesda Softworks, and look at the desktop UI of the people working on the levels, it looks like Windows XP.

As long as it isn't a DirectX 10/11 exclusive I don't care either way. I think it makes sense to have Direct X 10 or 11 support but I don't believe that a game (top tier or otherwise) "should" have the latest DirectX support, that just leads to games with token support rather than meaningful support. If there are tangible benefits to having DirectX 10 or 11 that's great, otherwise they shouldn't bother with it.

Why wouldn't it be DX10/11 exclusive. Its by far easier to make a multiplatform game if your PC version is DX10/11. According to Steam most users can use DX10. DX10 exclusive games like Just Cause 2 do incredibly well sales wise on PC. No reason to support something that will hold your game back.

It would certainly be developed to work on Win XP, but I have no idea why a game company would intentionally use an outdated operating system during the creation of the game. There's just no advantage I can think of.

There would be some XP test beds, of course.

Because it's cheaper and saves money?

13 million PC gamers use steam lastest hardware survey says 56% can run DX10. The rest is probably not the market that will buy a TES game or any AAA title on PC. Plants Vs Zombies, CSS,thats about it for many people. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Yes, I pray that they add these in. It will be almost 2012 at release, to not have at least DX10 support on a new title with a new engine at this point would be a pretty big mistep. The expectation is DX11 support. We will have been using DX10 on PC for around 6 years at the time of Skyrims release.

Plus DX10/11 support would help with performance on PC's and allow for awesome (toggle off for console), volumetric effects, tessellation, and more.

Why the would hamper the people that would like to use that stuff just for the reasoning that consoles cant do it is beyond me. Just turn it off as if you are turning it off in graphics settings on the PC version. No reason to leave the engine hampered like they did with oblivion, where dynamic lighting is only now even close to being modded back in.

I said this in another thread. Beth likes the bleeding edge of tech. They MADE their own engine.

Now, why would they not future proof the engine with dx11 support?
dx11 IS the bleeding edge and has been around for a while now, there is no reason not to include some feature from it.
And just so we're all on the same page, having dx11 support doesnt mean your dx9 only card cant play the game!

There is very little reason not to include it.

Thank you! Your right plus DX10/11 make the effects much easier to toggle off. Tessellation, and volumetric effects especially. Much simpler than DX9 where you had to alter your lighting system or rewrite a whole Shader effect.

I'd prefer OpenGL. It's just as good an API, if not better, and it's cross-platform. Break the Micro$aft monopoly.
