Im not sure if this has been discussed but im wondering if skyrim will ship with directx11 for the PC? This game looks amazing , im hoping they optimize it for so the pc people with power rigs can push the graphics to the max.

Nothing has really been said about this, but it has been revealed that a lot of the graphics stuff has been designed for 360, then ported over to PC. Lame, I know, I want dx11 features too.

As Deathcoffee said, there has been no word on it one way or another. All we've heard about the PC version has been about AA, textures, and vague promises. I do agree, I'd love to see them include features like DX11 support for the PC version. When Todd is saying that all three versions will look just as good, though, it gives me doubts.

The only thing that gives me hope , is thats what crytek said about crysis 2 ( which dont get me wrong looks great on the 360 ) but the PC puts it to shame and its in directx9a , if they release a directx11 patch ..... holy crap. PLEASE BETHESDA RELEASE A DIRECTX11 PATCH FOR THE PC

Crysis 2 wasn't even a DirectX 11 game, Skyrim has no chance.

Crysis 2 was barely a PC game, it's no benchmark for anything.

However, yeah, DX11 support for skyrim seems highly unlikely.

I'm assuming the game will be DX10. I mean, Oblivion was DX9 so it would be stupid to make skyrim DX9 too.

I really don't care about the possible lack of DX11.

How well they are use the tech (DX9) is far more important than what kind of tech they use. Adding support for DX11 when it's in reality a DX9 game is just pointless.

I'm assuming the game will be DX10. I mean, Oblivion was DX9 so it would be stupid to make skyrim DX9 too.

Assassin's Creed was DX10.1, then patched to DX10. And then AC2 removed DX10 altogether and was DX9 only.

At this point, there is no chance to get decent graphics from a console ported game.
Just look at DA2, it has DX11 support, but still looks terribly outdated and ugly, with many older DX9 pc games to have superior graphics by ages.
The graphics in Skyrim are destined to be mediocre, and even DX11 effects won't save it - so let's hope its at least going to have great vanilla gameplay, unlike Oblivion.

Depends on one's standards, for me Red Dead Redemption and Uncharted have great graphics.

According to the latest Steam hardware survey (based on Steam users of course) http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ only 5.6% of gamers own DX11 GPU's. Therefore it makes little economical sense to put resources into developing assets for DX11 given that the largest portion of the gaming community at 56.36% are still using DX10 level hardware. We'll all just have to wait an extra hardware cycle before getting our preciouse tesselation and super soft shadows I'm fraid :)

They could always be, y'know, optional. DX11 GPUs are relatively cheap, but there's little reason to upgrade as even a several year old GPU still holds its own. The moment games that use DX11 well start coming along that number will spike.

And until then, there's always the super high res texture pack mods - and effects - that would put any sparkly vampire to shame...

What the devs do not do because of compatability or performance issues, the community will probably do; if only because those 5.6% MUST prove to themselves that their insane investments in the newest tech wasn't a complete waste of money :flamethrower:

:tes:

EDIT: Just for clarification; DirectX is a TOOL for developers, it helps them create things like realistic shadows and better looking textures though ray tracing. HOWEVER! The end quality of what you get out depends very much on how well the developers can push the technology envelope behind the available resources. In most cases sacrificing compatability with still widely used DX9 platforms is a bad strategy, as the gains from DX10 and 11 are still marginal and widely underused - a mistake which was made with Shattered Horizon (which required top of the line GPUs at the time - a real deal breaker for many).

Those beautiful screenshots I have posted a few times of STALKER are running on DX9. So it can be pushed quite far, e.g. Specular Occlusion is a DX9 feature. But DX10 does have much better lighting.

I dont think Skyrim will make use of any of those features though. It will be a DX9 game.

Considering that they're already beyond "mediocre" in the compressed-video trailer of the X360 version, that's a really silly thing to say.

Probably not DX11.

Although, DX9 still looks freaking fantastic to me. Games are still coming out that look great on it. So I don't really see it as a problem.

My thoughts about DX11 and it benefits:

DX11 got more realistic lighting. Much better depth of field.
And sometimes incredibly big performance differences (we're talking about a 40-50% performance difference in some games, on other games less, but still better performance).

Better performance means more things can be maxed out or added graphically. Or that the game will just run smoother.

DX 11 also means tessellation without hurting the performance too much like DX10 do with it. Tessellation would be PERFECT for Skyrim, since it uses a lot of boulders, rocks, stone-paths, stone-buildings, etc. Tessellation can really bring out stuff like that and make it look much much much more real (as long as it's not overdone...). If tessellation is not in, then DX10 could include parallax occlusion mapping. The results are almost as good as with tessellation. A flat, depth-less stone-path get to look like a real path of many singular stones. Amazing.

That's the biggest benefits of having DX11 as I see it. I may be missing some. Oh yes, DX11 has a lot more possibilites for modding. The reason Timeslip couldn't make OBGE "extend" more was due to DX9. It's a big difference between DX9 and DX10, too big to extend. If Skyrim has DX10 even, perhaps Timeslip can mod DX11 in.

Anyway this video with leading game developers can be useful to find out more of the benefits of DX11: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghazN5L7Ncw

In any case, if DX11 is not in from the start, it would be great if it gets added later in a patch. But obviously we shouldn't blame Bethesda too much. As we know, even the graphics-king Crytek has DX9 by default FOR NOW (patch to DX11 later). Still, it shows that perhaps adding DX11 into a complex game isn't the easiest thing to do?

All pc gamers probably want dx11...

They said that they will polish the pc version later, closer to release... and Dx11 is my nr 1 on my wishlist! Please listen to the PC community!

Just wanna clarify that just because a game has DX11 doesn't mean it suddenly graphically look awesome.
If done properly on DX9, it can look amazing too.
Here's a two good examples, enjoy :D

According to this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1175109-directx-11-in-skyrim-is-inout/ (still open if you want to vote), there are more players on this forum with DirectX 11 GPU's than originally I thought...
