Dirty Water!?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 8:02 pm

Why is dirty water so hard to find?
However, in a post apocalyptic nightmare world where every source of water outside of the vault is saturated with radiation I am drowning in buckets of purified water.

I would have thought the chain would have been
Empty bottles used at stream/lake -> Dirty Water
Hand pump -> Dirty Water

I daresay there's a mod out there but I'm trying to stay mod free till the GECK is out and there's less risk to my save games.

Not that having lots of dirty water would matter, since you can turn it into pure water at any cooking station, so if anything having more dirty water would just lead to xp farming.

I have water purifiers built at my settlements, so I don't have any dirty water. I usually don't even bother to pick it up.

I've thought the same, some recipes specify dirty water so you do need it!

There is a mod switching those recipes to Purified Water.

With the settlement and crafting system as is xp farming is not so difficult any way ;)

It's required for a few recipes, mostly soups. However there is a recipe you get for Brotherhood of Steel that requires 5 Dirty Water!!!

For me it's one of those little inconsistencies that shows the world is just not that hostile. It would have been nice to see an extra layer in settlement construction where you generated Dirty Water first and then distilled it to Purified Water.

I figured there would be. However I've had issues before with early mods ;) I'd much rather a more logical progression to water production than simply change recipes.

Well its been 210 years since the bombs fell, plus previous lore made it quite clear the radiation went down to managable levels within years of the bombs dropping, so by 210 its not hard to imagen sources of pure water are becoming quite common.

The risk of any unfiltered, undistilled water is more likely to be one of micro-organism contamination rather than radiation.

However, regardless of lore, if you stand in a body of water with minimal armour and without the Aquaboy/girl perk you get +10 rads/sec one of the higher exposures ;)

Is this a tease? Something you 'think' should be in the game or something you know can be done?

And thats a open water source, most likely affected by the radation storms from the glowing sea, but ground water further down would be safe.

If you start building food / bar vendor shops in your settlements, the shops usually have a handful of dirty water for sale.

There is a strange ratio in favor of Purified Water to Dirty Water, I've found.

I guess the way I figure, people got into the habit of boiling their water more.

Like some guy came into town, going "Guys, guys. Guys. Just keep an open mind....If we STERILIZE the water first, maybe it won't make us sick!"

Maybe there were a few dissenters, "Geoff, you're talking the crazy talk again. Have you been taking chems again?"

And a few were like "You know, maybe Geoff is on to something here...Howabout we boil it, and let it cool first, then drink it."

And you know there was that ONE guy... "Nah, Dirty Water is the way my daddy drank it, his daddy drank it, and maybe possibly his daddy's daddy drank it, I dunno. This boiling business ain't natural and is against our culture."

"Shut up, old man Jimmy..."

And Old Man Jimmy be all "You kids and yer adhesive and yer cookin' and yer hip hop! It's witchcraft and debauchery is what it is!"

But it was alright, because no one really listened to old man Jimmy anyway.

I agree. Incidently was going to make a thread on this topic several days ago, but Vhaegrant saved me the trouble. That, however, is unimprotant, but what is important is the rarity of dirty water. Perhaps it is as rare as it is to act as a gate for crafting some of the more potent items that use it, or perhaps it is simply an oversight and was intended to be more available. Though in most instances it would be better to use purified water, would it not? As it stands now I relish aquiring dirty water more than a majority of other items, which I find strange compared to other entries in this franchise. Thus far the best way I have found to procure it is to purchase it whenever you can, but even still the BoS request does put rather much strain on the paltry supplies. In all honesty, I think it should be more available or less necessary, but I digress.

Quite amusing, and true. There is always the traditionalist trying to hinder progress.

If only you could make a water irradiator instead of a water purifier so you can get dirty water at your settlements lol.

Well...When you think about it...That would be any stream or body of water.

I foresee a mod that let's us bottle water right at the source for this particular need.

It is funny how in Fallout 3 the entire game revolved around creating a water purifier, but in 4 we can just plop one down in any pool of radiated water to purify it. Also, Sanctuary sits on a river of radiated water yet we can't use it for these recipes.

Besides Rivet City, not a lot of towns and settlements were near a body of water, and there was really just the Potomac, which also had the risk of Mirelurks nesting nearby.

Would have hated to be the guy assigned Water Purifier duty in Fallout 3.

The purifier in Fallout 3 was meant to purify water volumes far greater than a few bottles a day. It was intended to provide water for the entire Capital Wasteland and beyond.

Yes, I know. It was a huge project. I just thought it was funny when I built my first water purifier in Fallout 4.

I would also like if hand pumps produced dirty water instead of purified one. Would provide source of dirty water (which is used in some recipes) and would make purified one bit more precious. As it should be. Would also make locations where you can build water purifiers bit more strategic.

....And lo, it took the Sole Survivor five minutes, and a handful of scrap, to accomplish for one town what it took the Brotherhood of Steel and a few scientists a whole game to accomplish for an area.

Fallout 4 is set about 10 years after #3, maybe the knowledge the world gained from your exploits in the Capital Wasteland were used and shrunk down into an easily made purifier!

...which you somehow know how to make straight out of a freezer you've been in for the past 200 year... :-/ But hey, I have an intelligence of 1 and I can make a frigging generator out of some cups, a tire, a lightbulb, and a desk fan! Who cares, I'm having fun :D
