Disable Physics

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:19 pm

I loved the physics engine in oblivion, how dropped items would move around the world realistically, and I always had good fun jumping up on fully decorated tables and just kicking everything around. But one of the things I loved doing in Morrowind was displaying my items all throughout my house, perfectly placing all my glass weapons on one table or making a stack of books placing a lantern on top, then removing everything so as to have a new lantern on my ceiling.

I could never really do that in Oblivion, as one wrong move, or one accidental bump into a table would send everything flying. For display purposes, would you like to lock, or disable an items physics to keep it in a set place?

And when I say lock or disable the physics of an item, I am thinking more of something you could toggle, so items would have physics unless you wanted otherwise.

Nope. I say the solution to that problem is better physics.

I would rather them fix this instead of lock the physics.

That would of course be nice, but even with better physics, decorating could be a pain. Maybe there could be more rules to govern items in your house, such as weapons or lanterns as I mentioned, so you could decorate your house to your liking. Perhaps something like customizable display cases.

Yeah the physics svcked in oblivion in that regard. Every contact was like you were trying to punt the item into orbit, and god help you if an enemy dropped his sword on death and he was on even the slightest of inclines in a heavily grassed area. It was the no friction world. Fix the physics don't remove them.

A few people are already talking about this topic. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177616-displaying-items/

This. No more band-aids on every little thing, fix the physics and get it over with.

I think the main issue is any significant physics effect should only occur when you are making some kind of affirmative action like hitting the attack button. Other than that other contacts should be assumed to be incidental contacts and have limited to no physics effects because there would be a lack of force. That doe snot seem like that would be hard to fix so physics overall is still in and it would not interferes with everyday activities.

Oblivion's physics system had the gravity values of object all too low, they just have to remedy this and it ought to be fine.

Unless you do anymore of that jigging across the table that is. :whistling:
