Disabling game Addons? (Minor problem)

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 12:43 pm

I dont think this is a serious pc issue, but since I have NV and it's on my PC I figured I'd ask here.

When I was going to start a new playthrough (fresh) I didnt want to use any of the bonus item packs ;the special sets you got for pre-ordering the game (The tribal one, the merc one, etc) when I go to start up New Vegas, I go to data files and make sure they are unchecked, so they wont be in the game, however even with the boxes unchecked, when I went a did a test playthrough, it still gave me all the items from these packs.

I was wondering if I was missing something, or if I cant really avoid getting these item packs. I know this isnt a serious PC issue, was just hoping I could get an answer.

Thanks guys, and I hope those with serious PC problems are able to come to this fourm and get the help they need to get their games running smooth!

E: just to clarify, I got all 4 of those packs via the steam Add-on that added all 4 to the game, I've checked to see if I could find the "Courier's Stash" (the name of what the DLC was called) and uncheck that box, but there isnt one, just the 4 seperate packs that I have unchecked.

Go to the New Vegas\Data folder, and delete the .NAM files for the DLC you don't want to load. If you want them back, have Steam verify your cache and it'll redownload those tiny .NAM files.

Thank you, but when it comes to PCs, I really don't know my way around them all to well, espeically when it comes to altering / deleting files. I've tried right clicking on the NV shortcut on my desktop in addition to searching steam, but I can't find anything that has a list of files that I can delete.

Maybe you'd be able to help me with that? I'll keep searching in the meantime. it was only 2 bucks, so i dont mind if I lose it, for me it just svcks to start with all these weapons and everything, takes the fun out of the game.

Heres a little mini tutorial with some file browsing basics. Not sure what your current knowledge of PCs are so I included as much as I could.
You can Ignore what you already know.

It's easy. You need to open an explorer window. You should see "my computer" or just "computer" on your desktop. If not on your desktop maybe in your start menu.
This will open an explorer window. You should see all the "disks" on your computer (hard disk(s), dvdrom(s), usb drivers, etc).
Ill assume you have one drive which should be labeled "C". Drives are assigned a drive letter from C (which is usually assigned to the system hard drive) to Z. A and B are usually floppies.
When I say drives I mean hard disks, dvd-roms, usb drives, software drives, etc.

You want the disk drive you installed steam on. Ill assume the C drive so open it by double clicking it.
You should see a list of folders and some files. If you right click your fallout new vegas shortcut and select properties you should find a textbox labeled target. This is the target program the
shortcut runs. It should look something like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\FalloutNVLauncher.exe".

This is the path to the fallout new vegas launcher Following the path is also easy. This path shows that fallout new vegas is installed on my C drive. You can follow along in the explorer window. So in this case (I have windows 7) you want to double click the Program FIles (x86) folder, thenthe Steam folder, then the steamapps folder, etc..... until you reach the FalloutNVLauncher.exe file. Think of folders like actual folders. In a folder you can store other folders or files.

Where you want to go is the main fallout new vegas directory. That is where the launcher is installed. From here you want to open the data folder. The .nam files should be in there one for each of the DLCs.
You can either move them out of the data folder, delete them, or create another folder within the data folder and move them there. That should disable the DLC stuff.

I right clicked on the Icon and selected properties and in the Target box it reads: "Fallout: New Vegas", but it is greyed out.

I also went into my PC, drive C, program files, and scrolled down to steam, to open that, and I couldnt find a new vegas folder. What I did was I just used the search box in the my computer window, and I typed Fallout New Vegas, and got a bunch of different folders IE: Fallout NV. DLC 1, 2 etc etc.

I saw the ones that had the pack's name in them (merc, tribal, classic, carvan) right clicked and deleted those, I then went to go to start up FONV, and clicked on the Data files (located in the laucher) and the packs are still there, I cannot right click on them or drag them out.

I think I may be missing something, anything you think I did wrong?

P.S. Thank you for the information and the help so far!

E: Heres what I've tried to do, I've gone into My computer, from there I clicked on my C drive, and in the search box I typed Fallout: New Vegas. I see that list of the DLC and such and they are NCF files. As I said before, I went in and deleted them earlier, but when I checked here agian I found that they are back. I know I deleted the right ones because they are labeled as that certian pack, but I'm still having no luck.

Under properties of the shortcut is there a textbox labeled "start in". The path should be there somewhere. What OS do you have?

The fallout new vegas folder is in the steam folder you just have to look further. From steam you go into "steamapps" then "common" then "fallout new vegas". You should be
in the root install directory of new vegas. You will see the new vegas launcher executable as well as falloutnv.exe. The files you want should be located in the data folder from here.
They should have a .NAM extension not .NCF. It's been awhile since I tried this so the steps are fuzzy. They shouldnt come back unless you do a file verification. Maybe this has changed.

You can also try renaming the .esm or .esp files associated with each of the DLCs you want disabled.

I have windows 7.

Also, I went the way you told me to go: Steamapps to common, and then to FONV folder. I see some of the files such as the read me, some old screen shots (that I deleted) The FallloutNV icon, the Launcher, and one that is just called FalloutNV which brings me to the game start up (just like the launcher does). There is also a Data folder, Redists folder, and a few other things (Maintitle, medium, VeryHigh, Installscript.vdf, etc)

when I clicked on that data folder I saw that each of these addon packs Had 3 named files associated with them, for example The Classic Pack is showed as : Classicpack-Main.bsa then there is a ClassicPack.esm, and finally the Classicpack.nam. I'm assuming it's one of those that I need to get rid of or delete?

At this point, even if I delete the addon permanently it isn't a big deal, the thing was only 2 bucks off of steam, and besides it's no fun to start with all this stuff anyway!

It should be the .nam file you either delete or move to a new folder (named "nam files" or something).
You can always revalidate through steam if you want it back if you deleted it.

So, would there be a problem if I deleted the other 2 folders in addition to the .nam folder? I dont think there would be a problem if I left the other 2 named files there, right?

Thank you Jasper for all your help!

other 2 files you mean? THe .esm and the .bsa? There shouldnt be any issues if you leave them. Just make sure the .esm is unchecked. You could also delete them again just revalidate when you
want them back. Does it work when you delete the .nam file?

Alright, quick update before I head to class!

I went to delete the files, and deleted the .esm ones first, after I noticed that I got rid of the .nam and the .bsa. It looks like if I want this add-on back, I'll get it through revalidation via steam (haven't tried that before, I'm sure it can't be that hard) I went to start up the game and checked the game files, and they are not anymore!

Agian Jasper, thank you SO much for all your help, greatly apprecited bro!

Heres the revalidation steps if you need em:

game cache:
1) Open Steam
2) Right click on Fallout: New Vegas
3) Hit Properties
4) Click the "Local Files" tab
5) Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Cache"
