Disappearing settlers.

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 10:31 am

Does anyone know why this happens? Is it a glitch? I've built a settlement at Kingsport Lighthouse, and invited one of my settlers from Sanctuary to live there. Things were going fine for a while, but then I left one time and came back and she was gone. Vanished like a fart in the wind. I don't think she was killed or kidnapped, as I received no notification that either an attack or kidnapping had occurred. Though, come to think of it, it was just the two of us besides Dog and the brewery robot so I guess if she was kidnapped there would be no one to tell me about it, as I don't believe kidnapping missions pop up automatically. Who knows. Maybe she just got lonely and took off. On a side note, I once spotted this particular settler back at Sanctuary, yet I had not sent her there. It seems she has a flighty personality. She came back to the Lighthouse that time, but this go around its been days and days and she's still absent. My Pip-Boy says 0 settlers at Kingsport, so I suppose she's gone for good.

I'll miss her.

I've been to Kingsport. I don't blame her for leaving.

But, no, I've never had a settler just disappear. Of course I don't "send" settlers anywhere. They stay where they land and I leave 'em there.

Missing settlers happens to me occasionally. I'll go to a settlement that has 18-20 settlers, but may only be able to physically find 15 or so. But if I go back at a later time, they are all visible. Don't know exactly what the cause is, the game counts them as being there, but they aren't visible to assign or upgrade their equipment. I haven't tested this yet, but I've wondered if its related to how you arrive at the settlement, meaning by actually walking there or fast traveling. Also, if you assign one of them (or more) to be a provisioner to another settlement, they will still count as a settler there, but won't be around because they are on the road most of the time. And if you do assign one to a different settlement, especially far away, it will take them time to get to the new settlement. I've done that and actually arrived before they did.

It's possible they could be locked where you cannot see them. The AI pathing for them does not always take into account new walls or foundation blocks being placed where once there was open land. I've found settlers trapped underneath stairs, or sometimes inside foundation blocks.

If that happened, do you know if my Pip-Boy would say 0 settlers? Or would it still show 1?

Yes, I've had settlers leave but it was early on in the game when i was mostly ignoring them.

Perhaps they were lonely, unhappy and took the big jump from the top of the lighthouse or moved on.

Also there are only so many settler variants available and sometimes you will see settlers that are clones of each other.

It's funny when you see 3 identical settlers sitting next to each other.

i like to mix it up and play Barbies by collecting and buying them nice clothes and hats.

Yeah, I was totally about to hook her up with a nice laundered dress, too. She had no idea what she was missing out on leaving like that.

I can remember one time when I set up the drive-in.

I went away to do some stuff and returned to check out how the recruitment beacon was going.

As I was walking over the hill to check things out I noticed a prospective new settler looking the place over from the road.

When she turned up her nose at my settlement and walked away I actually, momentarily, felt quite offended.

I have this problem at Croup Manor. Only guards and shopkeepers can be found reliably, anyone else is a coin toss every time I visit.

Thanks for the chuckle. LOL

Btw, I think your settler has totally left. I have lost Settlers too. Vanished, no kidnap reports, but they're still counted in my Settlement counter.

Yes for some reason some settlers wander. Its noticeable in the questgivers (since you get a map icon pointing to them).

I've had people in Sanctuary Hills who want me to go kill some ghouls in the lockup a little south but when I kill the ghouls and go to turn in the quests the settler is wandering around the ghoul infested ruins of Lexington. If you wait long enough they'll make their way down to Spectacle Island (they may get stuck and start treading water somewhere near the sea floor in the middle) but if they do make it to the island they'll wander around there for a few days before walking back to Sanctuary Hills.

If they're still appearing in your settler count but are nowhere to be seen they've just gone on a little world tour and should eventually come home.

I think they go down to the basemant there.

I had to instal a bell at Croup.

When they aren't there I ring it and the missing settlers usually pop into existence.

Isn't that what the Provisioners do? Travel the caravan routes.

The settler count and happiness ratings etc. are not in sync between what you see in workshop mode and what comes up via the pip boy menu. Sometimes they are, but definitely not always. Recently I tried to send a settler to Nordhagen, and it was greyed out because it said I had 22 people there already. Fast traveled back and sure enough, it was just 11 as I had remembered it to be. It is odd that sometimes settlers can't be found, but even then they are still counted. Provisioners are still counted even though I don't believe they ever use their designated bed, your companions that are parked there also count, even when you're both nowhere near home etc.

Supposedly the next patch is going to improve how these meters work. We'll see

Do you have people assigned as provisioners from that specific settlement? Even though they are not physically there because they are on a caravan path, they still count towards your population and resource demands.

She was a provisioner, but she wasn't assigned to a route. She was shucking corn. Maybe that's the problem: she was the trucker type, not the shucker type.

I experienced exactly the same. Well not exactly the same, since my settler didn't give a [censored] about Spectace Island but was visiting the Castle instead. Also he must have been a very fast runner, because he gave me the quest in Sanctuary to kill some ghouls in Wicked Shipping Fleet Lockup. I went straight there and killed the three ghouls in no time, but when I wanted to return to the quest giver, he was already at the Castle.

That's a thought. I hadn't really considered that my settler simply went to another settlement...even though she did that once before.

I have three settlers that routinely walk into my cement shack foundation and only the tops of their heads are visible. The do not come out when I ring the bell. I only found them after tripping over them.
