Disappointed by location?

Post » Wed Feb 10, 2010 3:48 am

I think the geography will be varied enough, especially since real world Scandinavia has enough variation that it could be very interesting.

My only concern however is that the designers could make a very maze-like warren of impassible mountain tops and fjords that could make exploration frustrating and extremely time consuming. Even if Skyrim is rife with natural barriers, it could be cool, as long as our map has mountain passes and convenient river crossings marked because honestly, it's not like they'd be secrets and it'd make planning your routes more realistic as if you'd actually have knowledge of the area or if you carried a proper map. Let's face it, most people who made their living travelling around Skyrim would know how to basically get from point A to point B.

as long as they dont pick a beast race location im just fine with it. plus i love nords. the only thing that i would have preferred is that they picked the bretons and then did the nords next so that skyrim wouldnt be hampered with last gen console restrictions.

The game world is only as boring, or interesting, as the devs are willing to make it.

Cyrodiil was a boring fantasy land because the devs didn't bother putting the effort into it to make it interesting, politically, religiously, or geographically.

How could anyone possible want more provinces?

Cyrodiil felt way too small (considering that it was supposed to be a huge province and the seat of power in a empire) and now you want MORE provinces?

Am i the only one who hope they will just focus on a smaller region of Skyrim instead?

Agreed, people just don't seem to grasp the consept of scale theese days, if Beth were to made a TES game set in all the provinces on current technology, they'd have to change the scale A LOT. If they kept the gameworld roughly the same size as Oblivion (they didn't make Cyrodiil that small because they wanted to, they simply couldn't make it much larger), then each province would be roughly 9 times smaller than it would be if it got it's own game. I believe the author of the Infernal City stated that if Cyrodiil were life sized, it would take days (possibly weeks), rather than hours to travell between the cities.

Anyway, back on topic, Skyrim was my second choice; right behind High Rock. There's just something about a land where a man can pick a hill, build a castle and declare himself king of a miniscule land that equates to good gameplay IMO. Plus, with the (almost) collapse of the empire, the various kingdoms would have been eager to fight each other for land without fear of outside intervention.

As a side note, Skyrim can't really be that snowy, remember, the Nords came to Tamriel from a place even further north than Skyrim. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that like on Earth, the further away from the equator you go, the colder it gets, so unless Tamriel is in the southern hemisphere of Nirn, Atorma (sp?) would be even colder. Now that I think about it, it'd be kinda funny if Tamriel was in the Southern Hemisphere; everyone loads up Skyrim for the first time, expecting snow, only to find that it's rather quite warm, tropical even  .

The thing I am hoping for most is coniferous forests. Like the one in the Cryengine 3 demo. I would give a link but I can not find it on youtube right now...

Those were great, would enjoy if TES V looked like that as well :P as for the topic, I'm very happy with Beth's choice...I love Nordic lore and if done well (hopefully it will) the world will be amazing.

I'm glad they picked Skyrim, Artic tundra will be a nice change, I mean the only thing better than this would be to explore a desert.

I like wasteland kind of areas that are barren.

I hope to find many mead halls, old wooden forts where Imperials and Nords duked it out.

Possibly a Morrowind styled ity inhabited by Dunmer. Lets say the Nords wanted them to build a village or something and some of their style was mended into the architecture like they said it did with Bruma.

Ice caves, and maybe a Wampa reference of some guy killing his horse and spending the night in its entrails for warmth.

I'm quite happy with Skyrim, I've been wanting to see it for awhile now (basically ever since I visited Solstheim). I know the Nords aren't Vikings, but I've always liked Viking history, the Eddas, the Greenland Sagas and all that, so I think I'll really get into Skyrim when it comes out. I'll be playing my Nord warrior from Morrowind, finally coming home.

I hope the next game is in the Summerset Isles. I want to see the Altmer cities. Or maybe Valenwood. What can I say, I like elves.

I think it'll be cool if done right, but I'd much prefer to see Elsweyr or Valenwood. Hoping for "Beyond The Mountains Of Madness" references.

I'm not disappointed, and I believe that if Bethesda can make as interesting cities and locations as in Morrowind rather than Oblivon, Skyrim will be an awesome province to explore.
I haven't read the book, but I've heard that the Empire is about to/has collapsed, but I would still love a strong but limited Imperial presence in Skyrim. The Imperial forts and towns in Morrowind felt powerful but limited to small areas. I would rather have that than the uneffective and pathetic Empire we saw in Oblivion. I don't think Cyrodiil was the perfect place to set a game in. I can't get over the fact that the Empire have strong presences in it's conquered regions, while in the main province all the forts have fallen to simple bandits (that wear Deadra armor at lv 20) and the small legions left are unable to accomplish anything.
I really hope that Skyrim will be more like Morrowind (and I even played Oblivion first!).

If I had got the chance to choose, I would've said Summerset Isle mostly because at first glance it feels more exotic than snowy Skyrim. The second reason is because it's an island, and you would be free of invisible border barriers (though that's far from a gamebreaker). And the elves themselves seem more exotic at first glance as well, and since the island is quite small I'm sure they could make it full of unique landmarks and cities.

But now we got Skyrim, and I can't wait to see what Bethesda has in store for us. Frozen caverns? Frosty forests? Cities on top of a glacier/ice? Hotter zones where vulcanic heat gives the area a unique look? A city on top of a mountain? A city underground? I don't know how much of Skyrim that has already been established in the lore, but if it's for the better or very minor, they could always retcon.
Or just create new.

REMEMBER THE EMPEROR!

If someone else besides me wanted to see more of Tamriel represented, maybe that could have been done in O: instead of having Oblivion gates taking you to outter-earhtly planes, you'd be linked somewhere in another province and do stuff there / solve a chapter of a bigger crisis linked to Cyrodill's problem. After that, the gate would not properly be closed, and you could go on travelling there and stuff.

Apparently Todd was really into the Lord of the Rings movies at the times, which is why they had the design choice of generic/basic fantasy. Whether it was "boring" or "interesting" is a matter of opinion, and I don't think it's fair to say the developers didn't put any effort into those things just because you didn't like them.

I'd have preferred Summerset Isles, it seems like the most beautiful province in Tamriel outside of Cyrodiil or Valenwood.

Indeed. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean someone didn't put any effort to make it. There's a difference between "cheap" and "boring".
