I'm disappointed this week.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:07 am

Ultimately, yes, there were a few new details, and the two or three new pics were very nice, but hardly the amount of new information I was made to expect.

To add to that list, we've received details on puzzle-based dungeon exploration, as well as somewhat-confirmation that the dragons we're fighting are the Jills.

I don't really know what people were expecting. I was expecting some basic news coverage with some new scraps and that was about it. It's a dead-week in between the winter release season and E3. They're gonna dole small bits and pieces out to keep press hovering, but they're not giving anything meaty and completely fresh until june.

They mentioned an NPC going "I thought I heard something..." after a buddy they were just talking to got an arrow put through them, before running after the player.

Only one article said that about that situation and even if that did happen, there are many reasons such as the NPC heard you fire the bow and said that right before the arrow hit the partner so that it sounded like she said that as her partner was killed.

I think you're reading a bit far into that comment. It would be nice if your character is animated to actually take stuff from the world, but I did not get the impression he meant it that literally in the article.

Well I did but it's oly our interpretations of how it's said. I just find it odd that multiple articles said it in such a manner as to point out picking the flower.

Pretty sure we've heard about that before.

Nope. The only thing close to that is that we saw plants under the water in a screen.

We've been told before that there are others that use Thu'um.

Yes, but that would be the greybeards. We weren't told that the Draugr could use them.

Except for the chain lightning spell, this isn't anything beyond what's already been mentioned or had in Oblivion (the skill screen pic mentions an Ice Spike spell and the "mind destruction" spell sounds an awful lot like Frenzy).

Frenzy svcked and I can't remember what the name of the spell was but it is a much improvement over Frenzy from the way it was explained. Also, it was said as a "ray of frost" not an ice bolt. There are many spell effects, there isn't just going to be one frost spell.

Ultimately, yes, there were a couple new minor details, some confirmation on that which we already knew/speculated, and the two or three new pics were very nice, but hardly the amount of new information I was made to expect.

That's the problem, you shouldn't expect any new information because none of us are entitled to any, thus you should never be disappointed.

The game still has a ways to go bud. Think of it this way, if they tell you all the info up front there will be nothing to learn about later and all of your dedication to finding information by reading articles and such will diminish... as will your hype :)

To add to that list, we've received details on puzzle-based dungeon exploration, as well as somewhat-confirmation that the dragons we're fighting are the Jills.

Puzzle solving was mentioned before. Specifically, looking at the claw item in 3D to figure out the lock was the same example given in the GI article. The dragons being Jills is an interesting footnote, but there's something odd about the way it was mentioned (only one article ever mentioned it)... that's going to warrant further confirmation, since we don't know if Todd said it or if the journalist is into the lore and made the connection themself.

I don't really know what people were expecting. I was expecting some basic news coverage with some new scraps and that was about it. It's a dead-week in between the winter release season and E3. They're gonna dole small bits and pieces out to keep press hovering, but they're not giving anything meaty and completely fresh until june.

I was expecting new tidbits all week. But the pics and some articles hit very early monday, and everything since has been nearly the same thing. Personally I was hoping, with how the very first new thing shown was the pics of the Khajiit and Orc, for the rest of the races. Or at the very least, more pics of them. We've got, like, a million pics of Mr Nord Guy, but only one each of the Khajiit and Orc. Heck, even the Imperial has a few pics, and he's not been properly introduced.

the 45 minute demo that was showcased for the media wasn't too bad. now we have all of these nice descriptions and article to read.

but i can understand where your coming from. its getting to the point where i really would like to see a gameplay video. like five minutes of someone wondering around a town would make me happy. i have a feeling that we'll get a lot at E3, but thats not until june.

I'm happy, I would like to see some more races though, but in the end we got some new info and some nice screens, which is nice.

Puzzle solving was mentioned before. Specifically, looking at the claw item in 3D to figure out the lock was the same example given in the GI article.

Looking at the GI article right now, the only thing they say is "The golden claw unlocks the inner sanctum." That could have easily meant (and I assumed it to mean at the time) that the door was simply scripted to check if the player had the claw in their inventory before opening. Whereas using the claw's actual texture detail to unlock a physical puzzle in the game-world was something new. As was the rotating of statues to disarm a spike-trap.

The dragons being Jills is an interesting footnote, but there's something odd about the way it was mentioned (only one article ever mentioned it)... that's going to warrant further confirmation, since we don't know if Todd said it or if the journalist is into the lore and made the connection themself.

Yeah, it's definitely possible that the writer just foraged around and found the name, or is into the series enough to know it. And that's the only article that uses it. But still, it's a rather specific word to use, where using it without informational backup implies things about the nature of the game.

Frankly, I think that's the only legitimate reason to be disappointed with the amount revealed actually only because it's the only beast race not shown.

Well, I liked the screenshots and the info that I read on the articles, plus the interviews with Todd Howard. Felt like a lot.

I personally won't be satisfied until I boot up the game itself on 11.11.11

This is exactly what it comes down to at the end of the long road.

I think they should have shown all the races at least.

I think they should have shown all the races at least.

Why would they do that and lose all focused attention on the races, when they can show some and leave the rest for a later time, especially when the latter will keep our interest and prolong coverage?

Sounds like the OP won't be happy until there either is a demo or the game is out. I for one am glad they are giving a little bit at a time instead of just giving all the information, then there wouldn't really be a reason to play the game honestly. It's like reading a book and then watching the movie they made from the book. You will be unsatisfied, disappointed or both.

I would've been happy with what we were told to expect. Last week on Twitter, Mankar Camoran asked Pete Hines:

@DCDeacon I was wondering if the new Skyrim info we are getting this month is the GTTV feature on Skyrim? Is there more? Thanks.
@Mankar_Camoran A lot more than that coming next week on Skyrim. Dozens of outlets with coverage. New screens.

That, to me, says we should expect to see more info than a bunch of nearly-identical stories, which themselves mostly give info that's been known and discussed before, and a couple screens.

2 or 3 new screens (the other "new" screens were in GI's magazine article from back in January)
Draugrs use Thu'um (which we already knew others would be using it; Draugrs is the only variable there)
A chain lightning spell
Water has fish

That's not really what I'd call "a lot" of new Skyrim info this week. We've already known that there's non-hostile creatures, we already knew you would be using the 3D item display to solve puzzles, we already knew the conversation system was vastly enhanced, we already knew about word walls, dragon priests, giant spiders, and dragon soul absorption. We already knew about the force-push and slow-time dragon shouts. We already knew you could do jobs and affect economies.

The thing about spell combos (casting a shield, then lighting on the shield to cause damage to whoever touches it) that one of the articles mentioned has my curiosity. According to what was said, these guys saw the same demo that GI saw in December. That would tell me that it's something they were playing around with at the time that build was made, but have since said that it may not be in the final game. So I'm not sure if that's something "new" that can be trusted.

No, no. I feel there are thousands of small details out there that we could be fed a little of. I don't want anything big.
