Disappointing Multiplayer

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:04 am

EDIT: Most of the above information relates to the "Campaign" in the menu bar. However, you can play a series of "missions" from the campaign with and against real players. In some ways this is even more disappointing news. You guys do realize that when they say "we are seamlessly blending single player and multiplayer" it just means that they are the exact same thing! The multiplayer modes are just parts of the campaign in which instead of playing against bots you play against real people. http://www.vg247.com/2009/06/12/splash-damage-talks-brink-single-and-multiplayer-modes/

I dont think that is correct, I highly doubt that it is invite only. Where did you get that information from, link?
Maybe they meant that if you want to play the singeplayer co-op it is invite only or something???

I think it's just a setting that can be changed. I highly doubt the multiplayer will be invite-only.

Have you actually taken time to read the Bible, Watch some other vids and learn more about it etc?

Im not quite sure im following what your saying here, But as far as "i" know...

No the game isnt "invite" only.... that is simply an OPTION there for you to have if YOU want your game invite only.

The purpose being is that - during the interviews, they state "The unique thing about Brink is that even in single player - People can still jump in and out your game, automatically turning that single player - now into a co-op....The player who joins the game - Will simply replace 1 of the *AI's* that was on your side.

So no - I think youve read into the video too much.

Im quite sure that its not "invite only" - Its just a matter of choice given too you.

It's because it's set to co-op. Besides, it's a much earlier E3 build from almost a year ago.

I think you may be misunderstanding, try not to think of this as like playing a cod multiplayer map in campaign with a small cutscene at the start saying 'Were stuck at this Array, lucky for us soldier theres a flag over there, if we cap that 3 times we may just survive this', then playing against another team of humans.
They have blurred the line, when I first heard it and read into it a bit, the only comparison I could think of was back in the day when I played tfc, maps like avanti and dustbowl (I think those were the names, I was 11 at the time) had progressive stages to them each with a different objective. Even then that comparison doesnt do brink justice. From what I gather, of course I could be wrong, they have created two full story lines, running parallel to each other, each stage in this story takes the form of a non symmetrical non arena style map, where each side has conflicting objectives. You can play this alone against bots, although im guessing the game is definitely meant to be played against real people as opposed to bots, or you can take on real people. This means it will be competitive yet have a story line for those who are interested.

True if you are after another game with the standard ctf, deathmatch, koth modes then you probably will be dissapointed (I dont know this as fact there may be an option to play a custom deathmatch game on a map of your choice), but there are plenty of those games out there. Granted they dont have SMART or the same kind of gameplay, physics etc etc as brink. Splash damage are just trying to be creative here and break away from the standard type of shooter. I personally think it sounds and looks great, I cannot wait to get my hands on this game, and I come from a competitive gaming background.

Definition of multiplayer: playing the game with other people. Does Brink have this? Yes. Your argument is invalid.

I have never played cod and never will (bfbc2 fan). However I understand it completely. I just think the idea is kind of dumb. You do realize that after one play through it is going to get old. Would you like to play the cod campaign 100 times, being forced to watch the cut scenes every time. Making this the "multiplayer" cuts down the play time. Sure it makes the actual campaign more challenging but what else does it do. I am not saying this is a bad idea (it is actually a great idea that should be added to most campaigns.) it is just that with out regular multiplayer fps game are stupid and dont sell. If it had the multiplayer campaign mission AND game modes like deathmatch i would buy this game in an instant.

I think you should first understand what the developers were thinking before you criticize them. You see, some players can own at campaign, but when they switched to multiplayer, they have not idea what's going on. That's why they made singleplayer and multiplayer similar, so similar they are the same, so they the player is familiar with the game play and be happy playing the game.

Also, please know that Brink is an objective based game. Killing as many people as possible doesn't really win you a match, it's completing objectives that counts.

The video shows 'Invite Only' on online play but can be changed to open or friends, so the multiplayer is not invite only.
Plus, SD are known for making Enemy Territories that are both multiplayer games and include mathcmaking, so having an invite only multiplayer would be a stupid thing to do on their part.

So does this game have regular multiplayer at all? By "regular" I mean, that on PC version, there will be a multiplayer/online/whatever -button on the main menu which leads to a server browser where I can join a server to play 8vs8 human player games with some kind of campaign style map rotation (like for example Radar, Railgun, Fueldump from ET or Dustbowl st1-3 from TF2).

If this is not the case, I guess I have to cancel my preorder. I couldn't care less about single player games, console style matchmaking, or narrative driven co-op nonsense. I thought that this was going to be "the next" Enemy Territory...

OK I just have one qeustion for everyone...
Who here has played multiplayer in Brink?

if you said "NO" then just get most facts straight or wait for the game to come out before jumping to conclusions that there isn't a solid "deathmatch" etc etc

if you said "YES" then that must mean you are in the beta and can really help clear all this up

I get what you're saying, just to be nit picky it would take two play through's one for each side ;). I agree with you too a degree, when I first saw the trailer with all the free running I was imagining playing the multiplayer, then I read into it and I was a little disappointed that I wouldn't be able to play death match or get any sick SMART flag caps(Again I dont know if this is confirmed, i just assume it will be this way, help anyone?). However, I dont think without playing the game we can decide how quickly it will get old.
I come from a gaming stock where we would play cs_militia on repeat for 4 hours and it was always fun, I competed in high level european console tournaments which means A LOT of going over the same map and gametype again and again....and again. Yet I always enjoyed it and had fun. I suppose at the end of the day liking a game is down to personal preference, you cant make someone like a game, maybe this just isnt for you? I think before jumping to a conclusion though you should at least wait for reviews or even rent the game? Thats if no one here can sway you lol.

I just wanted to be clear that you understood how it worked.

Seriously playing a map that is different depending on what class and bodytype you are and that is better than playing team deathmatch over and over again. If you don't like it go play something else.

This is almost exactly like every other multiplayer game. Well, not the singleplayer and multiplayer being the same game mode. What is exactly like other games is the fact that you have so many maps and in this case, each map has it's own objective. It's just that the same maps are used for multiplayer as the ones for singleplayer. The game doesn't have a campaign in the normal sense as there isn't one linear path that you follow. Also, multiplayer isn't invite only, "Invite Only" is a setting they were using so they were just playing with the people they wanted to at the demo. That setting can easily be changed to some sort of public mode. Consider reading the Brink Bible to help you learn about the game.

Counter arguement.
In BFBC2 How many times have you played Arica Harbor on Rush? Wouldn't that get old with one playthrough?

You don't have to play the Campaign 100 times and watch cutscenes over and over - you don't have to watch cutscenes at all. You can simply choose to play maps like in traditional multiplayer, without any cutscenes at all. Using bfbc2 as an example, imagine all the multiplayer maps were tied together to form a story. Each map led into the other to form a plot and purpose, with cutscenes and backstpry. Imagine you could play through the maps in a specific order to find out what the story was. Now imagine at the same time, you could simply choose to play any of the maps separately or in any order you please, without any cutscenes or story tied to them- like how you usually play multiplayer in bfbc2.That is like what Brink is doing.

Also, it is not invite-only. The devs have already confirmed you can set-up a game for private or public.

Oh, and you do realize that the link you provided in your original post, is almost 2 years old, right?

last i read there was a competitive mode called stopwatch, where 1 team starts off on defense and tries to complete the obj as fast as possible and the 2nd team will have to better their time to win. A bit different than what ppl accustomed to but im sure once ppl get their hands on it it will play very well especially since kdr isnt tracked so ppl only have 1 thing on their mind and that is the WIN

what the OP doesnt understand is that BRINK is an obj based game. Whereas there is no standard CTF, KotH, Demo etc the missions themselves are broken down into these all rolled into 1 mission closet thing i can think of is Killzone's warzone style where u have multiple missions in 1 match to complete in order to win

Do you want to know why some people own at campaigns, BECAUSE THEY ARE FILLED WITH STUPID AI!

There are so many things that could go wrong. What if one team is stacked, do you just not progress in the campaign.
