So the skyrim trailer...
hmmm....
It was rousing, the game looks absolutely stunning. Incredible. So much more atmospheric than morrowind or oblivion even. The animations are great. The npc's look fantastic and everything moves really well.
I think the bit where I had the shivers down my spine, was when the knight was fighting the dragon and his words matched the music, or at least seemed to. I was in joyful awe during that scene and that spirit sold me in the entire thing more than I have been so far, which is saying a lot.
That said, the trees are a step down. They fit - better, but don't - look, better. In other words, I would have them no other way, but oblivion trees, for what they where then, where better. Small detail for what it's worth, (it's worth about 0.0000000000001% of the overall picture, but i had to nit pick)
I think they put a lot of resources of the trees into, well.... everything else. It seems about as populated graphically speaking as oblivion, maybe less. But that feels so insignificant when the entire picture that's painted is so much smoother, more believable, and cohesive.
For instance, oblivion might have a really detailed scene, and that snowscene in this trailer looks bare. I don't think I could find many areas in oblivion that bare. Then again, take in 80% of the scenes shown in that trailer, and all of them just come to life in a way elder scrolls never has. They brim with life, the normal mapping makes everything seem a level higher. And while there is a most definite lack of tessellation, i think the game has taken a more "rage multitextured" look to it's surfaces. For the most part this is fantastic as rage is one of the best looking games on the horizon. In that regard things seem to merge better, rocks spike upwards, curvature is organic rather than janky. The clouds enveloping everything but only as clouds do, rather than some fogging system, is just one of the million details that add to the cohesion.
Once we move into town, things improve immensely. Maybe the snow scene being bare is due to current development. Not sure. The throat slitting, while still being a tease by not showing us any first person (theactual game folks.... sigh) is all soooooo promising. The scope of obliivon with this game running like it does, well, that lives up to my loft expectations. The fact that I am getting all the previewed gameplay systems not shown at all in the trailer. It's boggling how great this game is going to be.
In future trailers, I want to see first person, I want to see non town areas more populated with things, etc etc.
But for now, besides the trees, this is all quite grand.
