Discussion about basic Multiplayer Systems

Post » Wed Aug 05, 2009 12:57 pm

I've read almost every post about this topic, but I would like to know ohters opinion about this basic discussion.

In my eyes Crytek has 3 possibilities how they want to set up the Multiplayer System of Crysis 2

1. Console System

That means that there are no dedicated Servers at all. The matchmaking system works like this. A Crytek Server system is looking for the player with the best bandwidth. This player will host the match. All other players will connect to that choosen one.
That means no modable dedicated Servers, no modded maps, weapons, gameplay, etc. It also gives Crytek the chance to make some extra money with Crysis 2 if they should decided to release some DLCs, like mappacks and other stuffs for which the player has to pay.
Example for this Multiplayer system, of course: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (IWNET).

2. Limited Dedicated Server System

A system like that would work like this. There are dedicated Servers, but they are all controlled by Crytek. You will be able to run a Server on your own, but just on GSPs Crytek is trusting. That means there are DS, but controlled DSs, so you are not able to mod your Server like you want it to be. You won't be able to host a home Server and you won't be able to play in a LAN mode.
Example for this Multiplayer system: Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

3. Free Dedicated Server System

Well, easy to explain. Everybody is able to run an own Server, no limitation for mods, own maps or anything else.
Example for this Multiplayer system: Crysis, Crysis Wars, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare.

It sounds like I would hate Crytek, of course I do not. In my eyes it is one of the best gamedevelopment companies which is listining to their community. But I am just afraight that Crytek is going to destroy Crysis 2 Multiplayer with one of these MP Systems. Of course there are good reason the console system and the LDS system like to make it harder to crack the game, or to run cracked Servers etc. But there will always be enough legal gamers who buy the game and who would like to have a free MP System with modable game content.

That is my opinion. Now I would like to hear what others think about it, so please dicuss discuss and discuss ;) .

Crytek is about options there for the should probably go for a mixed of 2 and 3. This would allow for the great moding community and fun online.

Not entirely true. Modded Servers would still be avalible is Multi-player was set up this way; it would simply restrict who can mod to those who are exceptionally savvy in the ways of game cracking. Using your example, modded mutliplayer modes are avalible in COD, however due to IW being strongly opposed to this kind of modding, constant updates and patches make the chances of getting on a modded server slim though not nonexistent.

Seeing as how the previous Crysis games were set up in a Free Dedicated Server System style, I am hoping that this trend will continue, and if it does not, then at the very least, I would expect Crytek to be more lenient with those who crack the software (unlike the folks at IW >.>).

The rumour is that Crytek is going with option number 3.

Yeah, the console was a thing that a lot of people loved. It has been a nice PC exclusive feature since Quake was released. Also the very good, flexible console made CoD 4, and CoD 5 very public.

While modding is fun and also supported by crytek i would still rather see some restrictions. Even though there are not many of those servers that have uber speed and super jumps etc they are still annoying.
Well i can live with that if there are only few of those.
But i would like to see that more than one map is played in server, that situation we have with mesa atm is absurd. Yes it is very good map but i would like to play other PS maps too on populated server.

Number 3 all the way, modding is what makes games live longer. They expand and do what devs may not have even imagined doing before!

I really hope Crytek will avoid this, because that is unreliable way when compared to these two other options. Also this setup makes it very easy to cheat with connection. Too much experience about it while playing on matchmaking. So number 1 is out of question in my opinion.

Number 2 works ok on BC2, so i could live with it in case of Crysis.
After all number 3 is still my choice because all of it's benefits compared to 2.

one of their employee's in a video already stated they were using "dedicated servers", so for pc it is that. that rules out any iwnet type rubbish.

Dedicated servers for consols would be great. Did anybody know how many and which multiplayer-mods will be in the game?

No infos about that, Crytek keeps it secret. Only information about MP is that Crytek UK is responsible for it.

Option 3 is the way to go. Hope they don't screw up like Infinity Ward did with Modern Warfare 2.
