"Discussion about everyone having the same movement spee

Post » Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:01 am

We kept all the racial movement speeds the same, that’s now a factor of what you’re wearing and have equipped. And starting max encumbrance is the same and is based on your Stamina attribute.

This is a disappointment. It's not a make-or-break thing for me, but it certainly doesn't make me happy. Let the complaining commence.

I was actually hoping this would be the case. I hated trying to escort someone in OB.

Besides, running faster on foot than the deer and horses ran was a tad ridiculous. I'm fine with standardized walking/running speeds.

No. Because you're still running the same speed. A Nord sprinting will sprint at the same speed as a Bosmer sprinting, just as speeds will be the same if they were walking. Which is stupid.

I actually don't understand why this is such a huge issue. I never noticed a big difference in racial movement speed in MW/OB, and its not something I ever picked races based on. Determining speed based on what you're wearing makes much more sense, and makes the game more strategic, than it does having it be based on what race you are. Encumbrance is a bigger deal for me, since I tend to loot everything.

Nope. Don't care.

I'd rather not run faster than a horse, anyway. It's just silly, and it makes the world seem smaller and the time it takes to travel becomes insignificant. Also, like in Oblivion, I could just run away from anything at roughly the speed of a cheetah by the end of the game.

To be fair, I would appreciate seeing some slight variation in racial movement speed and jumping ability, but it would have to be only minor enough as to make playing every race a viable playstyle without being different to the point of being unfair for those who don't want to play a more "athletic" race.

I think races like Khajit and Redguards should naturaly be faster than an Orc or a Breton. And an Argonian should be 3 times faster than every other race in the water.

i think this thread might be taken down =?

but it seems reasonable for every race to have the same run speed as a game mechanic but know
Lore-wise Khajit and Redguards and Wood elves are the fastest and can most likely outrun everyone

I was a little bit disappointed that a Wood Elf won't be faster then a Nord but it's not a big deal. At level 10 in Oblivion you were pretty much the same speed maybe 5 to 10 points higher if you were a Dark Elf or a Wood Elf.

Why is this thread official? Did the guys at Bethesda sanction it?

Not that I am particularly bothered, but has it been confirmed that everyone does indeed run at the same speed? Or has it only been confirmed that there is no specific 'athletics' skill? And finally what difference will it really make? Did we ever have races against other AI's or something?

Wether they were right or not was not the point of my post.

Let us brace ourselves for four months of needless pessimism.

ah its pessimism.

you know I don't think these kinds of threads need to stand, "Complaint" threads aren't allowed, maybe if it was renamed with a different stance sure, but this can easily turn into a flamefest.

i can see some races being able to sprint longer due to either perks, equipment or racial abilities in order to compensate.

It's turrible.

You should run based on how dark your skin is...

As long as a fully speed-oriented character can run as fast as characters in Oblivion and Morrowind I don't really care. Perks, stamina, spells, whatever.

Even I am not happy about this. Bretons should not be as fast as Khajiit. ( Unless it comes to clearing a plate, the little hobbitses with spells that they are ).

As opposed to four months of needless drooling over Skyrim?

I have stated it before and I will state it again.

Whenevr something is removed or changed, the only thing people focus on are the negatives. Instead of discussing the new possibilities and oppotunities that the change brings, they discuss only what has been lost and rant about how Skyrim has been "ruined" without actually knowing first hand what the new system is like.

Mindless Drooling over Skyrim is just as bas as Needless Complaining. How about we discuss things in a realistic fashion?

Why it matters: character variety. Even when wearing nothing, in the real world different people run at different speeds. I don't know why they'd remove this entirely instead of, say, tying it to your Stamina or something. I hope that there is at least some sort of framework in place to mod this feature back in. Console users are out of luck there, but then again they always are.

Unless your Nord is going to be wearing prissy little light armour like the Wood Elves, I don't think they're going to catch up. Personally I'm glad we're not going to be outrunning horses, and our speed is actually variable on what we wear. But, of course the internet is just full of baseless complaining.

Verizon

I really don't see how this is an issue; the walking speed is going to be affected by inventory weight and armor type (heavy or light)

Obviously ORCS would tend to use heavy items/2 handed weapons which would make them slower, While a BOSMER i imagine would use bows and light armor (generally speaking, but you can 'become' whatever you want).

IDK what topics you've been hanging around in, but in the ones I participate in its actually the guys complaining about the pessimists that are guilty of not discussing things in a realistic fashion.

Skyrim is doing a lot of good. But its also doing quite a lot of bad. Neither trumps the other.

Individuals run at different speeds, races do not. Germans aren't automatically faster than Brazilians. What Skyrim is doing is changing run speed based on the individual (your encumbrance, what you're wearing, probably perks or spells as well) rather than the race.

Exactly.

"For every action in the Universe, there is an Equal, Opposite Re-action."

For everything that has been removed, something has been added. Some of the changes will work, other's won't. Without this change and experimentation, BGS cannot learn and improve in later installments.

Simply put, things must change in order to survive. The Flaws of games are equally as important as the Good parts.

Yeah, but in the games all individuals of a particular race are of the same height and general weight, both of which factor in how fast a person can run.

Worked out well for Dragon Age didn't it? Change is good, but ignoring what works instead improving on them is not.

I can give Beth the benefit of a doubt when it comes to the Morrowind -> Oblivion change considering how much time they actually had to design it to work on the 360. But I would've thought they'd not only throwback to ALL of what made Morrowind great but also improved on them WHILE adding all of the new stuff.
