Discussion for Workshop Paid Mods - Thread 4

Seriously? Are you suggesting incorporate DRM to mods?

Even some big gaming companies admitted that DRM didn't work out and are considering dropping it.

And yet you are suggesting adding that to mods?

This is so backwards.

Encryption won't work really. At one stage or another the files will have to be unencrypted to have the game make use of it.

Exactly the same reason why almost every DRM fails. The key to it will at some point become available to the software on the end-user's system.

I won't condone it. Piracy is despicable as is stealing someone else's work to use as your own. Just pointing out that any DRM sceme is very likely to fail.

I doubt this will be the end of the modding community. Things will change, yes, but there will always be those that believe in the true nature of modding and continue to release their work for free. Whether it's on Nexus or elsewhere. Moral discussions aside, I think this whole debacle will paint a picture of where the "real" modders are. The term "Real modders" referring to those that believe in the free and open source nature of modding - the way it's meant to be.

I still believe that if you mod, you do it on your own free will and to benefit the community or your own personal preference for your game. If you want to make money from it, add a donate button or look for a job in the industry.
