Oh geez, didn't know SkyUI was going Paywall :/ Something so integral to the PC Skyrim experience. At least Arthmoor has stated the unofficial patches will always be free.

Someone at work brought this up. It's interesting that amongst the massive piles of sword/armor mods already for $ on the workshop, few seem to be wondering how many of those people have commercially licensed 3D products.
Maybe SkyUI will also be a timed exclusive.
This generation is all about timed exclusives even on modding .
This post is pretty clear and to the point from a modder on the steam forums.
'Unless someone starts making money off my work without my permission?
Or someone gets my mod pulled down because it is too close to their pay-to-access mod?
Or I legitimately use someone else's mod in my own, but they start charging for theirs and I need to pull my own one down.
Or people can't play mod without paying for someone else's.
Or I want to learn from another mod how to do a particular thing, but cannot because it costs.
Or someone randomly accuses me of stealing their work and gets my mod pulled down?
Or people won't contribute to my mod now because they won't make a profit.
Or maybe big teams of modders won't happen because everyone wants some profit and don't want to split the measly 1/4 between twenty people. Especially if two out of those twenty do half the work.
Or maybe down the line [censored] DRM practices get implemented which close down the ability for me to share my mod outside of Steam's infrastructure?
Or maybe down the line all promotion goes to paid mods rather than free mods?'
As I said earlier, this is one my of major issues with the current system in place. Given how many mods had a tendency to rely on one another to work nine times out of ten, it creates a awkward system where you might (Sadly, the onus is on the modders on a personal basis whether or not to actually sell a mod) have to buy two or three different mods just to get the one you want working.
As it stands, I do think there needs to be a much tighter grip on what kind of mods you're able to sell on the Nexus to avoid issues like this.
There is someone whose pending mod is instant mastery spell tomes... For those who can't deal with 'messy console commands'.
Also please tell me the smithing chest mods are some kind of sick joke..
This is the new level of quality that payed mods are giving us.
People are hiding their mods on Nexus out of fear of people stealing it and selling it, and some authors are completely erasing mods on Nexus and going the workshop route to sell them.
Assuming that is what you wanted to know.
That is good that the Unofficial Patches will always be free. Any word on future open cities mods? I'd hate for them to be behind a paywall.
Ya, shame SkyUI went that route. That mod was a godsend for PC players because the vanilla UI was way too clunky and vague. But I am glad the USKP team is keeping it free.
Yep. Hopefully next TES open cities are part of the base game though. Although now what's the incentive to do that? They can just let modders add it and make even more money,
Apparently the old midas magic has pop ups now that advertise the paid version.
@Rae,
Exactly--if you discover how to do something new and interesting, you have every reason to keep it to yourself if you can make money off it. I find it hard to believe that the same people who are willing to charge for their mods will be willing to share their techniques for free... Maybe we will even see 'resource Mods' for sale, to "teach" how to do things... :/
I don't think I could sleep at night if I tried something like that. Taking money from people who don't know any better in the scummiest way possible.
Believe it or not, game developers usually enjoy developing games. That's the incentive.
Woah, wait like IN GAME pop ups? For real?
There are two chest mods that add smithing stuff to whiterun pending so it seems like a few people are trying to cash in.
Oh wow, the Instant Mastery mod went paywall I use that mod to speed up any new characters I want to try out so I don't have to grind...
Yep for it would be a shame for it to go paid.
Yeah apparently so. Apparently he's been deleting loads of angry comments.
Unfortunately as told by devs at places like Ubisoft it is often not up to them what stuff they do. If the suits want to make more money that's what they do.
Chesko took a chance and was burned by both Valve and Bethesda. He has my full support and respect when he chooses to return.
What all did the mod have in it? No promises, but I might be able to make a similar mod, and upload it for free, of course. It would probably be a while till its made, as school doesn't let out for two weeks. I'm happy to try and make alternatives, if people want them, though my modding talent isn't too great.
Press the tilde key type in AdvSkill (skill) (number) to advance skills?
Ie AdvSkill Sneak 10000
Damn that's crazy, and a shame. Video games shouldn't have spam and advertisemants in them.
Some modders on r/skyrimmods are beginning to hide their mods that require SkyUI.
