A discussion of Heavy Armor types in Skyrim

Post » Thu Jun 16, 2011 10:36 pm

Ok, so first, let me preface this by saying that YES, I am buying Skyrim. Already got it reserved. And I'm extremely happy about how the game is coming along. Bethesda has done a great job. :goodjob: :tes:

Alright, now that that's out of the way.

We know that there are the following types of Heavy Armor in Skyrim:
Iron
Steel
Dwemer
Orcish
Ebony
Daedric.

6 sets of armor for heavy armor. Alright.

Now, let's take into account that there are the following pieces making up that armor:
Head
"Armor" (chest, pauldrons, greaves)
Hands
Feet
Shield

Ok, so 5 pieces of armor for each "suit" of armor. Now, let's multiply the pieces to see how many pieces of loot total there are. That's 6x5, obviously, 30.

Thirty pieces of "loot" to be had in Skyrim for a heavy armored class type. Does anyone feel that this is...a small amount? I mean, even Oblivion had more, and don't get me started on Morrowind.
30 pieces of loot to get to make my character better. Woo...hoo? Anyone find this extremely lackluster?

Where did Silver armor go? And why are there NO new types of armor (besides steel, but steel is a replacer for Silver IMO, taking away one and adding one doesn't mean more)? Is anyone else a little concerned with this? I mean, I thought for sure we'd see some sort of Ice armor or something like that.

I'd be surprised to not see Ebony Armor make a return.

You're right, I missed one armor type.
And there are 0 assumptions in this thread. The armors I listed + Ebony are confirmed in the game. It says so in the demo when Todd toggles the Heavy Armor skill in the menu. :goodjob:

Okay, first off, we only know that we have at least the heavy armors listed. We don't know for a fact that's a totally all-inclusive list.

Second, we don't know how crazy they're going to get in the individual varieties of armor. We have seen in screenshots at least two (Maybe three) varieties of what appears to be Iron Armor, and at least three varieties of leather armor. So I think you're jumping the gun a bit here.

Why in the world would the skill leave out armors? It didn't for Oblivion for Light nor Heavy armor. It listed ALL available armors in the game, save special armor from quest.

1. You're assuming greaves are out
2. You're assuming armor is exactly like Oblivion when we know there is a smithing skill. Who says every orcish/iron armor looks exactly the same and has the same stats?
3. You're assuming there are no other types than the ones listed under the skill.

I agree.

Bethesda could be doing dozens of armour types. Then splitting them into Crude, Basic, Forged, and Perfect styles.
We really have no idea at this point.

Nothing has truly been discussed about armour, clothing, and/or the possibility of layering them together (something, personally, I would like to see).
But, assuming the OP is correct - yes, I do feel that that many styles of armour feels punitive. That being said - Consider the possibilities of what they offer instead?

Why wouldn't it? Both are equal claims.

Would you like me to show you some screenshots of the variety of armor just in the iron line though? Maybe that will put this thread of baseless assumptions to rest.

there's 5 months before release.
Todd has not said anything about those being the only types of armor.

Even if they were, I can't see why having only 25 pieces of "loot" would be such a big deal.

The Restoration description, IIRC, only mentioned 2-3 spells; warding, circle of protection, and probably one other. Therefore, there must only be 2-3 spells for Restoration.

OH WAIT!!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

you do realize the game is suppose to be a rpg.

Also, the armor skills left out guard armors.

You, and everyone else, seem extremely hostile. Why so serious?
Also, have you LOOKED at the other threads in this forum? I think mine is a little better than all the baseless claims people make, considering I'm taking footage from a demo as proof of my claims. This is not "baseless" assumptions, these are educated guesses based on what we have.
You need to cool off. You're taking this forum thing way too seriously.

So Armor is generic.... but smithing is a skill...

and there are three different t ypes of Iron armor

Could it be that your smithing skill allows you to mix and match different aspects of your armor when you create it... i.e. pauldrons/greaves/cuirass?

Yes, the list that you have seems like a small amount... and I agree, what happened to silver? But the game isn't out yet... there could be some a lot of cool things out there that we have no idea about, including heavy armor types. However, with the list that we do have, I am perfectly fine with it. It would be sad to not see silver armor, but I am fine with steel for my classical "knight" appearance. I just hope there is some kind of "magical" look that you can add to a heavy set of armor or something similar.

I also remember that for the mining prof, there were 13ish ore types you could mine out. There's some chance for armor there.

You're referring to an armor type that didn't exist in Oblivion. Silver armor was switched out for Orcish, which makes a heck of a lot more sense - on account of silver being a soft metal. You could put a silver edge on a weapon easily, but an entire set of armor made of silver? Good luck with that.

http://cms.elderscrolls.com/sites/default/files/tes/screenshots/KhajiitTemple.jpg Say what you want, just on the color and patina alone, I can assure you, Iron.

http://cms.elderscrolls.com/sites/default/files/tes/screenshots/Riverwood.jpg. The Guard in the back looks like he might be wearing Iron armor as well, of a different kind, but it's a lot harder to tell without a close-up.

We notice the same thing with Leather Armor as well. From t he Assassin suit with the slacks and hood, to the heavier leather armors worn by the Nord woman looking out at Whiterun, and the Altmer in the tavern. Not to mention what the bandits are wearing.

waaaaaaaay too many assumptions in that
they havent said anything about how many armor sets are in, and certainly nothing about there only being the ones you mentioned
i really doubt theyed cut it down more than oblivion after all the negative feedback they got
just wait for more info
