I would like to also be able to beat someone to death with my staff.

I want the Staff of Magnus and the Staff of Hasedoki to return. Or at least more unique staves in general.

I also want my staff to reflect my enchantment. Say a fire staff will pulse with veins of magma. Ice staff should have a thin layer of frost, etc.

That should apply to all weapons.

It looks like he's about to fire it http://pcmedia.ign.com/pc/image/article/115/1158651/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110330052311168.jpg, but a staff as a magic light source would be cool.

Staves can be used as a light source now. And that guy is using just that. It's also in one of the few clips from the gameplay trailer.

Hmm, seems to be the same exact location.

Nice catch. Looks like him and a buddy are sending signals via morse code with the light further down the cavern in the second screeny. I know that isn't the case, but that was my first reaction to his staff in the foreground and the light shining back at him in the background. Wonder if that's the exit to the cave?

Anyway, on topic, I think it would be nice if your staff did something different than what you can do casting spells. Something other than the flamethower, rune, fireball, etc... mode. Maybe you could make it with a PBAOE effect or a wide cone. It would just seem redundant if the staff could be cast in the same modes (fireball, rune, flamethower) as you. Maybe they can only do one mode like a ranged attack. But having a mode other than what you can use as a player might make staves a more viable option other than when your magicka is low.

I want soul gems to go bye bye. Why can you make magic with your hands but need a battery to shoot it out of a stick?

A good point.

*sigh*

Number one - you don't "make magic with your hands." You call on existing magical forces through the use of incantations - spoken words. That's why Silence stops spellcasters.

Number two - even casting magic through incantations requires energy That's what magicka is, and why every character has a supply of it, which supply is used up when he casts spells.

Number three - a staff obviously can't speak an incantation, so the ONLY source it has for magical energy is the "battery" supplied by soul gems.

Your clamoring desire for what amounts to little more than a rocket launcher with infinite ammo is your problem - not Beth's.

Unfortunately this is better for gameplay. Bethesda knows that too.

I agree. A ranged weapon should require ammo. Simple as that.

Instead of staves being a sort of magical gun, shooting just one spell and requiring recharging from time to time, I'd rather they were a sort of spell amplifier. So you can cast any spell you know through the stave, but the stave increases it's effect. A weak fireball could become a much more deadly weapon when used in conjunction with a stave, for example.

Or better yet, have both. Normal staves with imbued powers over certain spells, and perhaps a special few that are hard to acquire that adapt to whatever kind of magic you can use and project it with more power.

That way, non-mages can use staves as "magic guns" when they want to, and advanced true mages (perhaps through a mage guild questline?) can acquire a "chimera" staff that can focus and project their own skills with magic in varying schools.

I think unique uses for staves would be awsome. Kinda svcked in oblivion that it was just like a backup reserve of magicka. Though obviously, you cant have THAT many spell effects in game....

I'm thinking uses like the light source seen in game, or an Albus Dumbledoor style one that make things darker. Maybe a combat stave that you use as a melee weapon and it does the damage on attack? if an enchanting skill is in then you could make staves easier to enchant by far.

I like the idea of passive staves that someone mentioned, thats really cool :D Like having a Fire Elemental stave, that increases the damage of all fire spells and allows you to parry attacks...
