1 or 2 disks {xbox360}

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:34 pm

i read some were a very long time ago that oblivion used just about all the disk space for the 360 version. dvds cant hold info like blu rays. any way im hoping this is going to be 2 disks on the 360 because i want lots of content. if its only one im going to be very sad and i will know that is no bigger than oblivion in content. mass effect 2 uses 2 disks on the 360 version for example. any info on this would be appreciated.

It's possible, but there's no real good way to split the data across two disks in an open world. Compression techniques have gotten better, so they can fit more data onto the disc, but the same sized world has already been confirmed.

2 discs in an open world would be difficult... and what if you crossed the cut off point then decided to turn around, you would have to change the disc twice...
anyway, i think you can use about 8Gb on a disc, so there should be no need for several discs, especially if theres better compression or whatever :)

they could easily split the data in 2 disc but you have to install one on your 360's harddrive..

i dont want to keep swapping disks i think there is more space than in 2006 and if not why dont we just download one disk to our harddrive if we have to so we dont have to worry about it

Don't the Xbox 360 have harddrive? How long will the loading time be if you have to load everything from dvd?
Oblivion was around 4-5GB so I guess Skyrim will fit on 8GB. Load times will probably be longer than Oblivion if they have to pack hard.

On PC you can fit even more onto the DVD, because it can be decompressed upon install, not upon load, so you can use much more aggressive compression - so not necessarily, but if so it'd be at installtim, not playtime.

If it uses 2 discs then i'll probably get it for ps3, can't be bothered with loading stuff onto my hardrive. Btw i think the second disc would just have content on that you install to harddrive, then play the whole game from the first disc. This avoids having to constantly change over.

Does the Xbox360 not support Dual Layer Discs? Wouldn't that be a viable option?

Apparently not since games like Mass Effect 2, Last Remnant, and Final Fantasy XIII are 2 discs.

Not every 360 came with a hard drive. There used to be a "core" edition which has turned out to be a bit of a hindrance.

Don’t really understand here, a harddrive is more than 10 times faster than a dvd, if you have a game who has to read new data all the time you enter or exit a building you would desperately want it on a harddrive to reduce load times, yes I assume the system stores the files on the harddrive automatically for faster access but a full install would give better results.

In this day and age you can get DVD disc's that can hold up to about 10gb maybe more, been a while since I last checked but when I did check last I could get up to 10gb on one disc. And that was almost 2 years ago so now its probably doubled and they will be fine with putting a ton of content on a single disc for Xbox 360

Anyways... I certainly hope it is on at least 3-4 discs for the xbox. I play PS3 so it will still just be on one disc, but the more data the better.

This isn't a linear game where story determines where you go. This is an open-ended world, and I have never seen such a technique done with more than one disc. You don't need multiple discs for there to be a lot content. That's a misconception.

A Dual Layer DVD can hold about 7GB of data. This hasn't changed, and this won't change, it is a physical limitation. You can't change them. A double-layer blu-ray disc can hold about 50GB of data, which is a bit more. That probably won't change either.

Either way does it really matter? If DVD was that limiting, Microsoft would have offered the blu-ray years ago. I don't think it's really an issue for gaming.

Microsoft actually did have a HD-DVD addon, but because it didn't ship as standard they can't use it for games. Consoles have set hardware, it isn't *allowed* to change. That's the whole point.
7GB is quickly becoming very limiting, it's just not enough data. On PC we're still in the area between "It's enough" and "Oh god we need more" because with stronger processors and install-time decompression you can fit more in, but on console, where things have to be decompressed on the fly, it's well past time for larger mediums.

I don't see how using two discs would work with such a open-sandbox game like Skyrim. However, they could just have one of the discs for installation only. Most 360 users have to at least have a 60g hard drive by now. And if not Skyrim would be the perfect reason to upgrade.

I really wish other games that use multiple discs had that option. Just installing disc two of Mass Effect 2 would be way less of a bother than having to swap discs constantly because I like to explore the galaxy!

This is what I was going to say. One disk had to be installed. In fact it can be 4 disks, because I believe any new 360 game can be installed directly to your hard drive and you need the disk to verify that you have it to play it, and then the disk drive is never used again. I always install to hard drive now.

Nah no way. I still have my first generation Xbox 360 which only has 11g of memory. I doubt most owners have at least 60. Those who have the new 360 and the Elite are a minority, not a majority.

Well, you are the only person I know that hasn't upgraded their memory. Most of the people I know (personally) have first gen xbox 360's and they've all upgraded their hard drives. With all the DLC and the ability to install games I don't see how you can handle only having 11g.

To clarify I said it was a minority who hadn't upgraded their hard drives. Not console. I still have my first gen X-box too but I also upgraded my hard drive to a 120g.

The hard drives are hideously overpriced, anybody who cares about not being scraqed for money shouldn't have upgraded. In any case, the moment you start requiring additional peripherals to play, consoles lose their one advantage over PC gaming - the simplicity. The moment you give them technical specifications that you have to have or you can't run the game, you invalidate their entire purpose.
