Display Cases...what a waste.

Post » Mon May 06, 2013 11:03 pm

So, I've just recently finished my new house, full of weapon racks and display cases for all my neat loot. But all of the display cases appear to be just that - plain 'ol display cases and not weapon display cases like found in the older purchasable homes. Meaning you have to manually place items in them.

So what's the problem with that? Well, the problem with items jumping around appears to still persist in my game. IE, I drop an item, place it where I want it, leave, come back, and it's up and flown across the room to a random location.

I know your pain, I just decided to stop using display cases in general. I saw this in DB as well, I just decided that not knowing if your weapon would be able to be found was worth the risk. So I just stopped manually placing items in houses.

i noticed this tonight too, i had no problem manually placing items tho, i just did the drop the item, exit house, then re-enter and place it trick. the only display case i was having trouble with keeping the items in were the smaller ones in the armory wing, daggers just dont want to seem to stay in them and kept falling out of the back of them

another thing i noticed was that some of the weapon placements dont line up correctly with the shields on the shield/weapon plaques. specifically the one near the main bed in the bedroom of lakeview the swords will place above the plaque instead of behind the shield

I usually have this problem, as well. Only weapons I find that usually stay put are daggers. The Blade of Woe has stayed in the display case I put it in so far.

I would think that this would be a simple patch job. Hey Bethesda, can't you just switch out the standard cases with weapon display cases?

What is there to patch? Anything that is going to fall through or jump out of a display case will do the same whether it was auto added or not. The display cases themselves did not change, you only lost the auto add option for weapons. They are not going to add the hand holding option, by this time you should have worked out how to use them, and be using them for more than just weapons.

it wouldnt be so annoying if we could just drop and place the items, its the whole exit and re-enter trick that gets stagnant after a while, especially for people like me that like to color code all of their ore into their own boxes =p

The cellar loading time is that fast it is not that much of an inconvenience just getting the area to reload. I thought decorating the Hearthfire homes was easier than the Vanilla homes with that faster load time, even if the respawning junk ruined the enthusiasm a bit. You do a lot of decorating you will get used to it.

The dispaly cases in Hearthfire never had an auto-place function on any platform.

The ones in Dawnguard will not have an auto add option either, and the ones in the Arch Mage Quarters have never had it. There was never any auto add option for the Oblivion cases, you always manually put the stuff in them.

Only using display cases for a single weapon is a waste, when you can do so much more with them putting the items in there yourself.

All the hand holding and mollycoddling should not be necessary for DLC, there has been plenty of time to explore how things work (or do not work in some cases).
And for display cases, so long as they give some the easy option, they will never bother doing anything else with them.

And if you get sick of those buggy Hjerim dagger display cases in the bedroom that eat daggers, you can always brighten the place up a bit by carefully putting some gems in there. I say carefully because the mesh does not seem to match with the textures, and anything you manually put in there will float rather than sit on the bottom. So having the whiz bang auto option that requires no work, is not always that great.

"Drop the item on the floor first. Then save, leave the cell, come back. Then you can pick them up and drag them to the shelf and they should stick, as long as you have not moved a stock item out of the way (it will respawn). Oh, and don't put the item back in your inventory."

Try this.

Nice to see a few fans were inspired to experiment a bit more with the display cases.

RFLOL you are doing it wrong:

This is the correct way of doing it:
Drop an item, leave, come back, place it where you want it. No wonder you are having problems.

Now off to Oblivion with you

I think it depends on the item. Clavicus' helm jumped out for me. Wuuthrad hasn't moved. The Ebony Blade is in a slightly different position each time I look at it (part of the handle did make it out once). Mace of Molag Bal hasn't moved.

Very impressive!
I really like the homey little touches you use, like blue mtn flower on the weapons, similar to in-game style.
I tried your style of loading ingots on the cellar shelves, but didn't know the leave/come back trick *SIGH*
After that colossal waste of time I don't know if I have the patience right now for any of this........maybe some day when I'm home with a cold.
