Disposition... I miss it

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 1:03 pm

I miss having the disposition stat for npcs. In TES III + IV I used to like knowing how friendly i was with a npc. I also had preferred shop keepers I'd deliberatley hold onto high price items to sell to them. With the limited dialogue it also allowed me to "fill in the gaps" in my head rp-wise with knowing how high a disposition a npc I had. Fame also seemed to affect it in Oblivion. Anyone else miss disposition?

You're probably right but I still miss it. Will look for a mod when I am finished on the xbox version in about... oh... 18 months and decide to buy the GOTY to play on pc.

This, pretty much.

I do kinda wish they'd bring back some of the mechanics of Morrowind for disposition; like being able to layer clothing and the "regalness" of your clothes affected people's dispositions. No one liked a naked Nord, but everyone loves a guy in gold gilded robes, diamond rings and a ruby/sapphire amulet. :D

Its still there, but for some unfathomable reason hidden from the player.
Just like what factions youre in and your reputation in holds.

It has to do I think with removing any and all RPG elements from the game, so that people who dont like RPG's will buy it.
At least, thats seemingly whats going on, especially when I read on this forum weird opinions like: 'Im glad spellmaking is out. Im glad there is no more armour degradation'.

"I hate your guts, I want to feast on your eyeballs and beat you so bad with a rusty spoon that your children will be born bruised!!"
*3 seconds later*
"Have you heard, the chapel in Anvil has been attacked!".

As you said, RP-wise it can be nice to "fill in the gaps", but game play wise it kind of stinked'.

Nowadays though it is as people has stated, hidden.
But I still feel that it's lacking in some instances.. Like when you talk to a guy when you enter Whiterun. He will ask which house you support and judging from his name you quickly choose the smooth path (supporting his house). From that day onward he will always give me compliments and say how highly he values me as a friend and how he won't forget what I have done for him even though all I did was keeping a straight face while getting quizzed.

Not a fault of disposition but of lazy devels who forgot to add conditions. ;)

But the developers are the ones that developed the disposition system, right? So even if they were lazy, the system lacked as a consequence. :)

I think it's more a matter of "the market has spoken."

Rather than taking the time and resources to developing, tracking, and determining responses based on a whole bunch of individual variables, making sure that hair blows realistically in the wind and that leather and rock differ in more than color is what governs sales and ratings. Processors can only do so much, and successful developers want to make sure they get the most bang for their buck!
