Distance fog mods?

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 2:43 pm

Has anyone made a mod which decreases the fog distance?

The link below is similar to what I'm looking for but massively overkill, I want a nice bit of realistic haze in the distance but not Morrowind *in your face* style fog.

Thanks.

Install Streamline, which implements distant fog. You may also want to try the OGE projects Depth of Field mod or Qarl and Timeslip's Depth of Field Mod. I have only tried the latter, as I do not use OGE. I only used the minimum setting because the others were too blurry to me. Streamline is the only mod I know of that implements distant fog, however.

I get what you mean. I've been looking for a mod like this as well. The distant objects on the majority of land looks fine, but once you get into the northern mountains it looks horrible. I mean, there aren't even any sprites for trees on the mountains, so it looks like someone just balled up some clay and placed it there.

EDIT: Tomlong, what settings do you recommend for Streamline? I've been using it, but I can't ever see the fog. I have tried raising the numbers as high as they will go, and lowering them as low as they will go, but I still don't see any fog.

You need to check out the "Streamsight Fog Ranges.mht" that came with Streamline and adjust the streamline.ini AND the oblivion.ini appropriately.

I just turn off distant buildings.

Yes they 'pop up' but it doesn't bother me. Oblivion has LoD anyway; this isn't any more distracting.

I certainly would be interested :), and by the sound of it so would the OP, especially if it provides levels of configureability similar to streamline (the sfon mod linked above seems a bit too drastic for me also)

I would definitely be interested in such a mod... Using Streamsight now but other option would be welcome!

And then reinitialize the new settings from the ingame menu. I'd try low settings if only wanting the distant fog effect (i.e. if not looking for a vast performance increase):

uGridDistantTreeRange=20
uGridDistantCount=20

From the screenshots, I think RedBag's fog tweak looks really beautiful. I have never been a fan of maxed viewing distance anyway, and I usually play with "vanilla fog" on, but it can be a bit too thick. Now to load it and find out if it works okay with my weather and darker nights mods.

Thanks, RedBag!

I've got a lot of other mods that make Oblivion beautiful, the fog mod is just a part of them :)
And thanks for the comment!

I will try this out too. I really like SL's distant fog, but it is nice to have options. The screenshots did not appeal to me because of the way the rising and evening sun's light cut through the fog. It looked like it had physical angles or something... I do not use a special replacer for the sun though, so I will expect it to look slightly different on my setup.

Edit: Thanks for uploading it so quickly. ^____^

You don't like god rays? How is that possible? I thought god rays were like ice-cream, everyone likes them ...

...I don't like 'em either. They remind me of bad Christmas cards. :hehe:

*runs*

edit: but to clarify, I think the godrays look more subtle in RedBag's screenies than I've seen elsewhere. Still not a fan, but at least they don't remind of http://www.tkstoystand.com/IMAGE1/LT_XM7/lt_box_xm_71868.jpg

I do not understand wanting to have the sun's rays that way all day, not to mention the magnitude... I am from the mid-east U.S., but even when I lived in Orange County, Florida the sun was not like that...

@ RedBag you do realise you are going to have to make a relz post :)

Just having a quick try, turned off all distant except land, still using OSR and Streamline, temporarily disabled VWD mods, upped the graphics settings a bit....

Conclusion so far - This is going to make my old desktop very smooth running. Might even keep it on the laptop and increase Anisotropic filtering some more.

I like the atmos too, reminds me of Morrowind but not overdone.... Endorsemant on its way once the three hour test period is up - Thank you.

Now, that is incentive to download. If only my system parts would arrive two days earlier... At least, Newegg is shipping them. ^____^

This is what I was looking for in a DoF mod. Those screenies look like more of what I would expect in my game. That's good. Cool.

:) Just had quite a bit of running around with it... Very nice on a machine that needs a bit of help. I have/had a very nicely balanced setup regards RAEVWD, but this makes that unnecessary.

@ RedBag - Does this also add to fog when oblivion weather brings it close - I was just in the swamps around Leyawiin when the fog closed in... It was like a real life pea-soup fog, with TIE installed and no levelling of creatures, things got a little scary for a while until the fog distance slowly went back out again - I like this a lot.

Now I have cut down on a few things its also tipped the balance in favour of installing All natural weather again too.

On the desktop yeah, for the families enjoyment and more fluid gameplay it was the straw that broke the donkeys back, its going back on now though ( I really ought to get a new desktop :) )
