Distant LOD *LOWER* than default res?

Post » Fri Oct 04, 2013 5:40 am

I'm playing Oblivion on an older machine and I've recently found a cool mod that draqes the entire LOD in fog, so you can safely turn of distant trees and such without losing perspective of the world around you. (http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/25052/?)

It got me thinking. Even though I can't see it now there's still an actual distant LOD at work, eating texture memory. Are there any distant LODs available that are lower than the default resolution?

I think the default texture size is 512x512 or 256x256, taking up something like 600 kilobytes. Since I'm not seeing ANY of it, it might as well be 1 kilobyte. Does something like that exist?

Disable Distant LOD completely from the game settings. If it's disabled, it's not using any memory.

That has.. nothing to do with my request. Sorry. I mentioned that I am using a mod that fogs up the LOD, but you still see the shape of it. Without the LOD, that doesn't work.

This 100% about the texture it uses, only.

Sorry, the implication was that you had found a mod which hides the LOD to save resources. If it's hidden behind fog then it shouldn't be visible and so reduced textures would still impact on memory while not being visible. Or is the fog fairly thin so that you can still see things through it? In which case, not really much point in having the fog, surely?
