DLC's are a rip off, but are they still worth getting?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 7:25 am

I never played the F3 DLC's because I was kinda disappointed with the game and I didn't really hear many great things about the DLC's, but for NV the DLC's sound more promising to me so I was thinking of getting them.

The ridiculous thing is that the ultimate edition of the game costs less than getting all of the DLC's (Gun Runner's Arsenal shouldn't even cost us anything...what a rip off). Are the DLC's really worth paying another $50 (for the ultimate edition). They should make the addons a complete package and shouldn't cost more than $20.

New Vegas is the first game I've ever played where I felt I actually got my money's worth for the DLCs. Gun Runner's Arsenal included. (Courier's Stash is more of a "collector's edition" status symbol, but I'd gladly buy it anyways just to support the company for doing such a great job on everything)

I played FO3's DLCs and sure they were fun, but I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with a feeling of mediocrity when I completed them. Vegas DLCs, I actually left satisfied.

As for supporting the company, do sales profits go to Beth or Obsidian?
At this point I'm more interested on spending money on full games such as the Witcher 2 and Deus Ex:Human Revolution due to the relative costs. Weighing that up makes me not want to buy overpriced DLC's.

I put about an extra 200 hours into NV since I got UE (I've also owned Vanilla NV since release), granted a fair amount of that time was spent in the Vanilla game but knowing that there were DLC's to play later in the game kept me going.

But I can't speak for how much time YOU would get out of it of course.

I would play NV DLCs again and again, before I pick up Deus Ex. I loved Deus Ex 2, but for some reason I couldn't get into the new one. I haven't even finished it, but I'm almost done with my 2nd play through of New Vegas and I already have my next character in mind! The NV DLC's are worth every penny! Great stories, excellent settings, nice new gear and weapons, well and perks. :)

Bethesda, though obviously it looks good for Obsidian as well if Bethesda reviews their sales of each game and New Vegas has a lot of sales. Financially it profits Bethesda but publicity-wise, it's good for Obsidian aswell.

I think the big thing that makes the New Vegas DLCs stand out is that typically, DLC storylines are incredibly limited. For example, look at Fallout 3. Operation Anchorage basically HAD no plot. Mothership Zeta had the most basic, cliche plot when it comes to stories with Aliens. The Pitt had a very basic plot that wasn't fleshed out too much, though a bit better than the others. And Point Lookout, again, has a very simple plot that leaves you going "wait wut."
New Vegas is different. Dead Money will completely change you playstyle for the duration of Dead Money and in the meantime, you're fed one of the best plots in the game. Honest Hearts itself is quite simple (though still more complex than any of the FO3 DLCs) but has a really nice sidestory you can dig up and it still has a purpose, plus it provides you with some of the nicest weapons. Old World Blues is the exception to the rule. That's the one that blatantly says "listen, I have little to no serious plot, so just go have fun with it" and in return, there's plenty of new toys to be had and plenty of exploration to be done. Lonesome Road probably goes over a lot of people's heads as the stories it has are purely philosophical, but it should definitely be saved for last, without spoilers. It's a challenging little DLC that basically tests all you've learned up until now, both skill-wise and moral-wise.
Gun Runners is worth it because the game is incredibly well-balanced, weapon-wise. So much so that you can start a new character, base him around a weapon, use it, and come to find a new way to play the game basically with that new weapon. Gun Runner's just extends the amount of well-balanced weapons for you to play with and explore which is fun in it's own way. As an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1ts_TVi-3w

I firmly believe New Vegas is the best written game I've ever played, and perhaps the most well-written game out there. (any others I'm missing?) Aside from tht, it's well-balanced and fun to play. In that sense, I think all it's DLCs are worth it cause you're experiencing more great writing and design.

Some DLCs are cut content from the main game, but with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, that is simply not the case. Both sets are well worth the money.

The New Vegas DLC I can recommend without hesitation. I simply think that the game comes alive even more. Aside from the extra weapons and armour, all of which are nice, you get to experience new locations and story. The fact that all of the DLC are linked, not on in terms of the Courier backstory, but also in that of recurring characters, such as Elijah, Christine, Ulysses etc, really makes it a great adventure.

EDIT - oh, Longknife, ever since you posted that Sprtel-Wood video I've wanted to try it out. I'm still saving up enough caps for my Van Graff thug (in the DiD thread) to buy one. I'm not walking the Lonesome Road without it.

They are a Rip - off but you are wondering if they are worth getting? You just answered your question in the title.

Agreed; it's a wonderful DLC. I'd argue the best out of the four.

He's got a nonsense-spewing thread about Dead Money on the spoilers section.

I think he's trying to gain attention by posting the same thing over-and-over on different DLC threads.

Try making a thread title that doesn't contradict itself.
Honestly if you enjoy fallout then yeah.

It's not contradictory.

The OP thinks that the Fallout 3 DLCs are a rip-off, and he/she is wondering how the Fallout NV DLCs compare.

It has to do with the way the title was written. If you don't read his post you will think that he is saying that the NV dlcs are a rip off. It's what I thought until I read his post. It could also mean that in general all dlcs are rip-offs.

For the record, I never thought that any of the NV dlcs were ripoffs. And Dead Money is my absolute favorite of them all.

He said it because they seemed pretty expensive when compared to the Ultimate Edition. If people are getting annoyed by this then its their own fault for not reading the OP.

Something that's a ripoff is not worth it by definition, but i don't see how you could have concluded that the DLCs are indeed a ripoff. I bought them all at full price and i have no regrets.

EDIT: Well, i only bought Courier's Stash so that i can play Sawyer's mod, but that was like 2 euros anyways.

I bought them during a Steam sale and I can safely say that after playing them I think they are worth full price. I have never bought any other game DLC ever, besides Broken Steel. I did not like Broken Steel and that turned me off of the whole DLC revoloution.

EDIT: Absolutely loved Dead Money... but I recommend adjusting any mods that decrease loot/ammo spawn and drastically increase the damage you take. I literally made it through the outside with 10% health and 5 bullets left.
