The thing is that, as much as devs like their game to have originality, there are simply some great features that are found in other games that would beef up any game of the same genre. TES being no exception.
But then you get the crying children who say "this is skyrim not ".
As far as the spouse you choose, it's been stated that if they are a adventuring companion, then they will travel with you. If they provide a service, they will continue to provide the service and I think you are suppose to get a discount. If they do both, then great, you have someone that will fight with you AND provide a service.
With that regard, it makes sense but you do have a point with regards to the limitation on interaction options. Personally, I would like to be able to have kids in the game and have them actually grow up as time passes. As with all kids, it would be cool if npc's and pc's alike actually grew old to eventually die but would seek out companionship and have children to basically "replace" them...to keep things simple. I think that the game would be less static and much more dynamic.
As for your own kid, since they would start out at skill 1 in everything as an infant, you could "shape" them into their starting stats. So instead of a Nord starting with +10 and 2H, they could start out with a +10 in Archery. You could then ignore pretty much any quest, go raise a family and then take control of your child once they became an advlt. Breaking the starting skill mold currently in place and the coming of the dragons could then be in response to an up and coming dragon born rather than an existing one.
