DLC doesn't fit in with main game

Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 3:48 pm

Has anyone ever noticed that add ons for New Vegas don't really make sense when your playing the main game. I mean if you side with a faction and they ask you to do something it's kind of unrealistic you'd just say, " Sure but first I wana go on an expedition into Utah, I will be back in a few weeks."

That makes sense, in a way. However, you can (in theory) play the add-ons at any point. You don't have to be in the middle of an active quest when you do one of them.

I think it would have been better if they didn't give you the chance to back out. When you go to the Abandoned BOS Bunker, they shouldn't warn you that you're leaving - they should just send you whether you like it or not. That would, in my opinion, raise the believability level a bit.

I do honest hearts before going into Vegas the first time, the Courier is just hoping the whole Platinum Chip business will blow over the meanwhile. As for the other two, she just gets kidnapped a lot :hehe:

Well none of the dlc is connected to the main game story wise either, you can do them at any point so its not like you have to stop mid quest to do them although I tend to people stop stuff and pick it up later all the time in real life so I don't see it ass odd. If the OP means that you can put huge things like the dam battle on hold it makes about as much sense in 90% of games that until you arrive nothing changes.

I found that you can make up reasons for that. Like your character gets tired of the fighting and hooks up with a caravan for an escape. But Graham teaches you that you have to fight for the things you believe in. Role playing is fun, and maybe a bit schizophrenic.

I agree. It seems a lot of people don't like using their imagination--they like being spooned every detail.

That being said, you can start the DLC whenever you wish. The reasoning for that is truly tat its open world but beyond that one can make a story as to why they're going to places like Utah, or places like that. Besides, that is one DLC--Dead Money and Old World Blues you are, in a nutshell, abducted, albeit by you taking bait.

i usually do the same thing except I'll just say that whichever faction I'm working sent me there or if I'm doing wild card I say I'm searching for resources to help New Vegas.

I love Yes Man playthroughs for DLCs.

"Where were you? I thought you were going to chase the Brotherhood? Why did you leave?"

"Utah. Hell if I know, I did it on a lark."

"Oh, okay! I hope you had fun!"

Wouldn't you be just a little, tiny bit pissed off if you couldn't do the DLC you just bought because you were in the middle of another quest? I think you would be. I know I would be! I'd venture to say that 98% of the fan-base would be (censorship! x3) infuriated if they were forced to complete some other quest before they were allowed to start a $10 DLC.

This ^

And what dar8888 said. You can play the DLC at any point. You don't have to be in the middle of an active quest. Pretty much most role playing games do that. You are given a quest and you don't have to do it right away. Unless it has a timer on it.

they are called dlc's for a reason. they're extra content, or stuff that was left on the cutting room floor. they're good enough to be played, but don't fit in with the main game for whatever reason. i have no issue with any of the dlc's "believability". what i would like to see is a dlc that affects the mojave. there are many places on the map that look like caves, but aren't caves. i would like to see those caves turned into strongholds (fiend, faction, etc.) so we have some nice places to use the ungodly amount of cool guns they give us. something like evergreen mills from fo3. i loved going in there, just packed with targets to destroy (and the behemoth was a cherry on my sunday). i would definitely pay $10 for a dlc like that.

I'd say being abducted by aliens fits with what he is saying. The aliens just don't come down and ask if you want to come with them. Once you go to the area it happens if you like it or not.

Say you come back and lyons asks you where you have been. You can say something about being abducted (don't mention aliens) he will say that is unfortunate glad you got out, something along those lines.

He doesn't mean sense as it seems right, but as the DLC's activating the DLC isn't exactly right. Though dead money and old world blues work. They are very similar to Mothership Zeta, abducted. Just pretend the thing telling you about it happening is not there.

I try to fit them for times when my quests take me close(ish) to their starting locations. The courier goes to investigate a point of interest and gets kidnapped. Again and again :hehe:

As i said, i play Honest Hearts first, before entering Vegas, Dead Money while returning from the Fort (doing DM when on my way to Vegas trough Novac would be too soon) and OWB when dealing with the Brotherhood (again when passing Nipton for the first time would be too soon, but i do explore the location then). If Lonesome Road begins where is speculated, i'll propably be playing it right after OWB.

Don't EVER bring that THING up again, I don't want to have to relieve the memory.

And the only one that really doesn't make sense to me is Honest Hearts, you get kidnapped in the other two and in Lonesome Road even though I assume we'll be going by choice you would still have a plausible reason to go just because you'd want to know why Ulysses has been stalking you this whole time. Honest Hearts I got nothing for though, there is just no real reason you'd ditch whatever faction that your supporting smack dab in the middle of a war just to go running off on a two month trip to Utah.

I agree but I think a lot of people do HH before they side with a faction which would make sense because dead money and OWB both suggest you should be a higher level.

We all know it was rubbish but no need to use MZ to generalize all the Fallout 3 DLC...

On topic I found most of NV DLC a bit out-of-place. Lonesome Road seems to be the only one that has a "justified" start. ALTHOUGH THIS DOESN'T MEAN I find the DLC bad in any way.

That is why Broken Steel was made for Fallout 3. Because they didnt tell people the game ended (Apparently) so they were "caught unaware" when the game did actually end.

DLC fits with the main game. Fallout 3's didn't but they were fine DLCs. Just no interconnected plot like New Vegas. The issue is with DLC their not able to patch things back to the main game due to voice actor availability and other factors.

Then again Broken Steel added a few, but not enough, changes to the main game.

I suppose that applies to Honest Hearts however,
With Dead Money you follow a mysterious signal and get taken against your will to the Sierra Madre. With OWB you follow a mysterious signal and get taken against your will to BT.
