DLC Exclusivity?

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:08 am

Bethesda has a long history of making most of their DLC a timed exclusive to the X-box 360, usually leaving the PS3 and the PC out in the cold for months at a time until they get around to releasing it for everyone or throwing it onto a Game of the Year disc so that you'll have to repurchase the game if you want to get ahold of it. What're the odds that this same cycle will repeat itself? How will you react if everyone can play the next chapters of Skyrim months or even a full year before you can?

So you wouldn't be open to them creating a high quality expansion somewhere in the vein of the Shivering Isles for Skyrim many months after release?

I don't really care... All DLC that I have seen to date just feels tacked on, it doesn't really connect with the rest of the game. I had the same issue with KotN an SI and pretty much all of the other DLC for Oblivion. They were nice stories/additions on their own, but felt totally separated from the rest of the game...

I wouldn't mind a nice Nordic castle to claim as my own...

Oh, wait, I'm on PC. I can create it myself :D

Nowadays all Expansions are DLC but not all DLC are expansions.

DLC is not the same as an expansion pack. Most games seem to use features that are already finished when the game goes gold as DLC, holding them for ransom to make a few extra dollars without doing any further work. Dragon Age was a horrible example of this. Horse armour was a bit shameful.
SI is much more akin to an expansion pack, I am all for that, just like MW's Tribunal and Bloodmoon.

Many examples of DLC these days would have been released as free mods a decade ago.

Expansion > DLC.

Anyway I hope it's released for all platforms. Better for us players and Bethesda should also earn more money if all can buy it...
But then again I'm not sure how much money a game company receives from the console company for making something exclusive.

It is most certainly not the same thing. DLC's are exclusively downloadble (hence the name) content often in small annoying packages whilst an expansion will often also be released in actual boxes and have larger amounts of content. I cannot stand these small DLC packages, I really hate they've become so popular.

I don't see the difference. DLC can be anything from horse armor to a full on expansion pack. It's all just Downloadable Content, which is a bit of a silly industry construct in and of itself. For example, Undead Nightmare for Red Dead Redemption gave you a whole new and rather lengthy Single Player campaign with new enemies, weapons and things to do on a pretty big scale. Along with new multiplayer features. It was a mere $10 and is generally thought to be one of the best DLC releases in years. It's more or less an expansion, but it's still classified as DLC. It's a misnomer and I don't really see a need to mention them seperately. Especially since the topic at hand is still applicable since, expansion or DLC, Bethesda still tends to make them exclusive to the 360 for a rather lengthy period of time.

I don't know but it wouldn't surprise me. But i don't really care, most DLC just pass by without me ever noticing it. If they make an expansion however (not DLC, there is a difference, Bloodmoon and Shivering Isles are expansions) they have my full attention.

Depends on if you consider the Fallout stuff as expansions. Point Lookout added a substantial new map and area to explore, new weapons, characters, storyline, ect. Just like Shivering Isles did for Oblivion.

I liked all of the dlc for Oblivion, even the horse armour.I think they add a lot to the game and are a far better quality than the dlc for most other games. I play on xbox, but I think that dlc should come out for all platforms at the same time.

A thing like the horse armor should have been in the game from the beginning. It's exactly that kind of DLC i just can't stand. It's not an expansion, it's just greed.

I'd suspect that Xbox will still get the DLC early. MS has a lot of money to throw around.

Depends on how things work out with New Vegas, probably. I won't worry about it for small DLCs, but a big expansion that goes to retail should get a simultaneous release.

DLC is probably here to stay. Knights of the Nine DVD with all of the Oblivion DLC on sale at Wal Mart for under $10 the week it shipped. Priceless.
Waiting for the FO3 GOTY and paying for the game again, not so much.

i better not see them giving DLC exclusively to the 360 and PC again... ps3 owners deserve it just as much as the microsoft butt-kissers... :swear:

Yes, but no more "Horse Armor" DLCs, I want expansions as good as Shivering Isles.
