DLC or GOTY?

Post » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:52 am

I played a lot of FO3 about a year ago. Have a bunch of mods installed including FCOM. Haven't fired it up for about a year (sorta binged out).

Now that New Vegas approaches, I thought it might be a good time to get back into Fallout, and was considering getting hold of all the addons or DLC or whatever for Fallout 3.

Given I already own a CD for Fallout 3, am I better off to buy each of the DLC separately, or just buy the GOTY compilation edition?

Which console?

If on PS3, buy the GOTY but start the game a fresh. (New game) Don't buy the add-ons separately. I am pretty sure you can find the GOTY for at-least $50. That and you will save space on your hard-drive.

Oh sorry, I'm on PC.

Yeah if GOTY includes all DLC, then that is a definite pro. But I've got quite a few mods running with FOMM/FOSE or whatever.

Heh, just went back and restarted my last save from like a year ago :) 111 locations discovered.

????

Whichever version is cheaper is best. The GOTY can cost less than the DLCs if you find the right place.

Just get the normal Fallout. They aren't too important and you should just wait til NV to do any DLC stuff. Getting the DLC for F3 now isn't worth it, unless you're really worried about mods, and some require DLC.
If you REALLY want the DLC just get the GOTY. It's cheaper that way.

What does that even mean? NV is a completely separate game having nothing at all to do with FO3 DLCs.

I already own Fallout3. I played it over a hundred hours last year, but stopped playing about Nov 2010. It is still installed and running fine on my machine.

The mod utility I was referring to was FOMM  (FCOM is for Oblivion). I also have FOSE, though I don't exactly remember how the two are different to be honest.

My mod list is not terribly long, but I was quite happy with the set I had come up with, and would rather avoid having to re-download and install them if I could avoid it:

Binoculars and Scopes
CALIBR
CRAFT
CALIBRxMerchant
FO3 Wanderer's Edition
CRAFT- Activation Perk
DCInteriors_ComboEdition
Slower Leveling
FO3 Wanderer's Edition Main File
FO3 Wanderer's Edition Alternate Travel

My last save file had about 90 hours of play time on it, and I had discovered about 111 locations on the Capitol Wastelands map.

I cannot recall if the DLC for Fallout3 come before or after the main map, it seems like one of them comes before, and the rest after?

Anyway, I would like to experience everything Fallout3 has to offer before I move on to New Vegas in 6 months or a year.

Given that, I'm wondering if it would be wiser to:
(i) Get the GOTY by mail, copy my mods to a different location, uninstall Fallout3, install the GOTY then copy the mods over to the new installation or

(ii) download each of the DLC separately into my existing install

ADDIT: well browing the Bethesda online store a bit, I'm now wondering if they even sell the DLC separately any longer. I think maybe they do not.

The GOTY edition usually comes in two discs, with the second disc containing the DLCs. If you can get it cheaper, I'd imagine you can simply install the DLCs on to your existing install (patch if necessary) and update your mods rather than uninstall and reinstall.
