DLC item usage clarification.

I just want to clarify something. Using textures and meshes from the DLC in a mod, that only requires FO3 is not allowed, correct? Because a mod I just downloaded uses the funky simulation pod from Operation Anchorage. I wanted to use this in my mod (I have not put it in yet), and I dont have OA and I thought it was something someone made themselves, but I just found out its from that DLC. So I could not use it in my mod, correct? (which would only require FO3 as a master) and can the person who made this mod even do that? I was operating under the understanding that if you use stuff from DLC, any meshes or textures, that DLC must be a master. I am just clarifying, lets not turn this into an argument or anything. Thanks.

You are correct. If you use a resource form a DLC, then your mod should have that DLC as a master to ensure that players have that DLC to run the mod.

Be aware that adding additional masters to your mod will re-number the formIDs of your own items (as your mod will no longer be the 2nd in the list (01), it will be the 3rd or 4th depending on how many DLCs you use.

I ran into this when I wanted to Remove some masters from my mod, and it caused me some trouble. I recommend using Fo3Edit to add the additional masters, as Fo3Edit will re-number the formID dependencies so that everything lines up correctly. Adding masters is very easy in Fo3Edit, and you get the extra checking and numbering to boot.

Luck! :)

Alright. That confirms it. I'm not actually adding the masters, as I only have the original game, no DLC. I just wanted to make sure I could not use it, because if I could I would use it. Thanks to you both.

There should be no issue with creating a mod that uses DLC assets without having it as a master, so long as you don't redistribute the assets themselves. Adding the DLC as a master is the easiest way to ensure that the user has the assets available, though.
