DLC as a mod requirment

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:57 am

Seeing as how the GOTY edition has been available for a while, does any one not have the DLC? I ask because I when I first came to the nodding scene it was a big deal to have mods that could run with or without DLC. I have been stuck in that mindset and it has cost me a lot of time and effort and maybe a bit of my sanity, so I'm wondering if it really matters anymore? If a mod is released that has all 5 DLC as a requirement, would that be widely accepted or would there be a ton of players saying "I hated Mothership Zeta! Why did you have to ruin this mod by using some of its assets?" Or whatever DLC players seem to not want.

I'm not sure. I have all DLC, I think many people do.

But IMO it's a good idea to avoid making any of the DLC required unless you really need the materials the DLCs offer.

But if the DLC content really makes the mod better, I'd say go for it.

You, being an experienced gameplayer and Modder, must already know the answer.

There will ALWAYS be someone who doesn`t have the DLCS. Someone, somewhere will either be unable to get the DLCS, be too tight to pay for the GOTY or whatever. Guarantee.

However, that said, the GOTY is so available and cheap now, and been around so long that there shouldn`t be an excuse to get it and even separate DLCs can still be bought.

I would say that by now, after a couple of years, it`s the person`s own carelessness not to have all the DLCS, so I`d go ahead and just make for all DLCs included. i`d pop in a note in your Readme saying `Get all the DLCs, it`s easy and cheap enough now`.

Interestingly... saying that, I`m having a devil of a time getting Oblivion GOTY, it`s either nowhere to be seen or costing way more than it used to.

I have all DLCs. There's some popular mods that require all of them. Go for it ;)

I don't have any of the DLCs. :P

I played GOTY on the PS3 originally, bought a cheap non GOTY PC version that I found. I'd never really bothered with the DLC much, and personally I haven't found many mods I'd use that require DLC anyway.

I do find myself occasionally wishing for some of the Anchorage gear though. :P

I think you have to weigh up the greater creative freedom you have with DLC with the less common issue of people being unable to play it.

I think you should make the mod exactly how you want, using whatever resources you think will make you most satisfied with the end result. If that means using DLC and the mod being dependant on it, so be it.
At the end of the day, there's not a massive amount of people still using FO3 mods so tempering a mod for a mass audience that simple isn't really there would just be silly.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am now comfortable requiring DLC when it makes sense. Creating models and textures for things already found in the DLC would be silly, likewise requiring Zeta and Anchorage for a ghoul based mod would be plain stupid.
