Doctor Who Series 6 Discussion

Post » Thu Jul 01, 2010 8:04 pm

Note that this thread will absolutely contain spoilers. Read carefully if you aren't up to date on the story.

So what are your thoughts on the premiere?

One thing I noticed is how almost everything moves along without any explanation to new viewers. Moffat is obviously assuming that at this point the viewer knows a bit about Doctor Who, but for a premiere episode that seems a little weird.

Here are the trailers for the next episode, Day of the Moon:

As a general biased rule of thumb, I generally like anything that had film shot in Utah.

Dumb and Dumber, Footloose, The Sandlot, Independance Day, etc.

I guess it seems that way, but that's just cause Moffat packed so much into the episode. The story never paused.

I liked it, usually the first episode of the season is complete crap. The ending cliffhanger was quite unique too. Horror rather than impending peril.

You notice it was a cliffhanger, but for the new series it had been mostly single episode stories, with just 4-5, 9-10 and 12-13 being two part stories. Maybe this is a return to the old days when virtually every story was at least two parts?

It was the normal length for a non-special episode. It felt quite long

Don't know how many would have caught the sarah Jane tribute on CBBC afterwards, but I thought it was very well done, a good acknowledgement of the "old" and "new" series.

As for the episode itsellf whilst the sets were great and the acting was awesome, I couldn't help but feel that there was something unquantifiable missing from the episode.

I'm pretty sure it'll be the same number. You know they're splitting this season up? After episode 7 (which ends on a cliffhanger) the series will take a break till september. So it'll be 1-2, 7-8, and 12-13, I think.

After the first 10 minutes or so, I started trying to figure out how they are going to worm their way out of the TV Show/Character maintainability problem they created.

I figure there's gonna be a huge continuity gap somewhere in this season followed by some "look, smoke and mirrors!"

We'll see. Hopefully the Doctor won't pull off the same thing he did in the Big Bang 2 (pretending to be dead).

I'm not so sure, between Moffat's often brilliant writing, and Doctor Who's... somewhat liberal take on time travel (Time can be rewritten, except when it can't, and then you can try but won't succeed unless you do), I don't think he'd write something in that couldn't be resolved well. That it seems like such a cheap plot device is exactly why I feel it won't be a cheap plot device, strangely!

Haven't watched it yet, mostly because I'm still on season 2 and Top Gear just interrupted my watching of that. My favorite doctor is always gonna be David Tennant though, I like his personality too much, and know this before I even see any other doctor.

It was strange to have a 2-parter at the beginning of a series. I enjoyed it nonetheless. I wouldn't be surprised if this dead, 1100 year old Doctor won't be resolved until later in the series.

Tenant didn't have a personality, he was just a squeaky ferret in a suit.

I think my favourite will always be Tom Baker, even if he did get some really bad scripts towards the end; though I was also very fond of Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the re-runs that I saw. After them, I'd agree that Christopher Eccleston was probably the best, and only marred in that one of the national rags spoilt it by revealing he'd only be doing the current series right after his first episode had aired. <_< Although a lot of people liked David Tennant, I found him too aloof and sanctimonious for my liking: it is often part of what the Doctor's about, he had it turned up to 11.

I enjoyed quite a lot of the episodes with Tennant, but as the series went on I got more and more annoyed by his continuous "Aren't humans brilliant?!" attitude. Watching Eccleston call us "barely evolved chimps" or whatever it was seemed far more interesting.

To be fair that probably has more to do with the writers than the actor, but it still made watching the show a bit of a chore at times.

I want to make sure I have the correct Doctor; Tennant was the one in "School Reunion", right?

In which case, I would have to disagree. Imo, he was much better than a squeaky ferret when acting with Lis Sladen, and when he finally admits to his current companion why he left Sarah, and why he will eventually leave her.

If he was a squeaky ferret, then he was one of the darker, squeaky ferrets. His Doctor admitted he had more mercy when he was younger. The other "dark" Doctor, from what I recall, was Sylvester McCoy.

There are still a few Doctors I haven't seen yet, though, so this is subject to change.

I was surprised by this episode, and that doesn't happen very often with any series or film. It will be interesting to see how the Doctor and his companions avoid that...incident. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. The one thing I didn't was was that the "limited commercial interruption" actually seemed extremely intrusive. I got the feeling that parts of the episode were cut out of the American broadcast to make room for these "limited" commercials.

Don't be so sure. Tom Baker was my absolute favorite Doctor for a loooong time, and then David Tennant came along. Now I can't choose between the two.

Tennant was a great doctor, one of the best; but to me there's no beating the classic three - Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee

Then I'm guessing "The Three Doctors" was your favorite Doctor Who adventure ever? ;)

Correction, squeaky cry-baby ferret. I do like how the 11th doctor is so much less of a crybaby over Gallifrey compared to ten. There's much less depressing ranting about dead time lords and daleks.

Well. I think we can all agree Day of the Moon was [censored] amazing.

Spoiler
Still trying to figure out who the child time lord is and how she's related to the Doctor and Amy. Is she River Song?

Actually, My favorite was to my knowledge never shown on TV - it was the Animated "Shada" orginally written by Douglas Adams (Yes, that Douglas Adams) for Tom Baker but instead adapted for Paul McGann. A sadly easily forgotten doctor due to his limited TV time (definately not due to his talent).

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/webcasts/shada/

But 3 Doctors is definately in the top 3.

Yep, I wasn't sure on the first part, but the second part was awesome.

Spoiler

I don't think it was a child Time lord.
I think the child has 3 parents - Amy, Rory, and the TARDIS.
