Dodging Movement

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:17 pm

I always love TES games more than any existing RPG,
but there's something weird about fighting a dragon.

I mean, if you are facing a huge monster, dodging is probably more important than blocking or striking.
While we do have dodging movements in Oblivion, it's too weak to cheat anything, not even a mudcrab...
I didn't mean every ARPG has to be played like Demon's Souls, but I do believe Skyrim needs this to be complete.

Do you think Behtesda know how to use it ?

Forgive me if this is a double post, but I did searched.

That dodging was really unrealistic and Legend of Zeldaish. Hopefully if they do include dodging they actually do it right.

I'd like more of a "the dragon will slam the ground there/spit fire in that arc, move out of the way you fool" version of dodging.

Yes, because people can do ridiculous backwards and sideways rolls while wearing heavy armor and carrying a sword and shield. This kind of dodging needs to be left to Ninja Gaiden, not Demon Souls or TES

Plus it would be impractical and probably very painful to roll around nimbly on mountains covered with snow.

How would dodging like in the video even work in first person? :/

I'd say, keep dodging to something more realistic, like maybe a quick sidestep or a small leap backwards (maybe like pressing the 'legs' button in Assassin's Creed).

I think the dodging in this video is riduclous. He rolls around like some ridiculous acrobat in what looks like it's meant to be heavy armour.

There would need to be an alternative.

I have to admit the heavy shield looks strange, :brokencomputer: but this character is wearing light / cloth armor in order to perform dodging...

However, if a fighter doesn't try to dodge dragon attacks in Skyrim, he'll have to completely endure them. It just doesn't make sense...

To be honest though, in Demon Souls you can roll and dodge in any armor, granted your skills are set up properly. I dunno I think that game looks awful though. Not my style.

I do want dodges to return, in fact Im pretty sure they things like this have already been confirmed.

Uhm, every game you've ever played, Bethesda has likely played 10 times more. I'm pretty sure they're aware. But Demons' Souls didn't come out when Oblivion did. Skyrim will very likely have a lot of this and it will matter much more, since you can no longer dodge by just running back and forth (which is partially what made the dodging in Oblivion completely meaningless).

Maybe there will be an auto-dodge perk to where you duck to the side or something. Something automatic like how shield bash was in OB.

So true. However, I wonder and would think that they may include it in the perks. That's my best guess. As to how it fits with 1st person, I leave that to the experts, cause I'm stumped

We simply don't know enough about the combat mechanics yet to say that

There could be all kinds of perks, buffs, special equipment, amulets, spells, shields or whatever else to help you in dragon fights. I agree that going in to face a dragon armed with a short sword and a buckler is going to be ridiculous, and I expect you would be absolutely toasted. Hence the need for careful preparation and thoughtful planning

Dragon fights should be rare, and therefore epic, and require a planned approach IMO

Is the search button really that hard to use?

What's wrong with Zelda? I loved dodging Iron Knuckles axe swings. Oblivion's roll and backflip animations weren't the best especially when you could do it all in plate armour.

I think dodging should be more of a dive, like in Call of Duty: Black Ops (OK, that is a terrible example but you get my point). It should be some last ditch effort to get out of the way, not something that you can just keep spamming.

I do too, except the problem with LoZ dodging is that you can just spam it, over and over.

I'm against it in TES. In LOZ it's how the games suppose to be played.
