Does any other game franchise have a fandom that are so part

Post » Sun May 06, 2012 10:27 pm

I think it's really awesome how passionate the fandom for the Elder Scrolls and I suppose Bethesda in general, is towards the games, that they (I suppose I should say we now) go over every tiny little detail shown in the games, and scrutinise and nitpick everything.

I really do think it's a unique thing in the game industry and don't think any other franchise really has this, or at least not to this extent.
And again, I'm saying this in a positive way, I think it's cool.

Seeing as how there's this "meh, they'll get it right next year" mentaility to the shooters dominating right now, no.

Though if you delve in to the RPG Dens on Korea or WoW guildhalls and you'll get a similar atomosphere as we TES fan have.

The more devoted fans probably know more about the lore than a lot of the developers.

Well there are people who try to find ways to troll communities, and a good way to troll gaming fan communities is to [censored] bout something [censored].

That's exactly the thing. If they screw Skyrim up completely, it takes another 5 years before we get the next game. :D

I'm not even a big Diablo fan but even I get annoyed by the real money trading, always-online requirement, and modding-is-strictly-forbidden announcements they made. Plenty of reasons to be angry. And they've been waiting over 11 years. :P

Well, the thing is, Bethesda have marketed their games to be best sellers, so naturally the attract a very large fanbase and a large chunk of them being critical about attention to details.

George R.R. Martin is going through the same thing. He suddenly has millions upon millions of fans who are nitpicking every little detail of his books and he's not too happy about it. Oh well, if you want to sell millions such are the consequences.

Human behaviour be that on an individual or collective level is never unique to one individual or group.

Go take a field trip to the Star Wars The Old Republic official forums. They put this place to shame in terms of nitpicking.

I think it has more to do with the enormous potential this game has, leading people to nitpick minor things that they think could have been handled differently. It's frustrating to know the game might be a masterpiece only hindered by a few bad decisions. Decisions like guards and merchants knowing which items are stolen, child witnesses that you can't get rid of, and compass markers that tell you where undiscovered locations are (which is my personal favorite.. also not known if it's toggleable or not).

Sonic fans got bent out of shape when Team Sonic made the mascot's eyes green, instead of the usual blue.

I've heard the Team Fortress fans are pretty picky too. Any change in the gameplay of a character? "OMG NERF" "OMG OP"
