Does anybody care about the town economies?

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 5:34 pm

I keep reading about how each town has their own economy. More than that, you can influence a town's economy by killing off merchants or investing in stores. However, not all the details have been fleshed out yet.

My feeling on this is that it really won't add to my Skryim experience at all. I've never wanted a feature like this and I just don't see how it will add to the game. Yes, this is an immersive RPG but no this isn't Sims 8 (or whatever number they're on).

I just wish they had put their resources into something else. Seeing is how this isn't an online game, I just don't imagine being too concerned with economies. We all know that eventually we'll be rolling in cash and it will be irrelevant anyway.

What do you all think?

ps I love all elder scrolls games. Overall, I have no doubt this will be my favorite game of all time. I was just curious what you all thought : )

All I care about is having somewhere to sell my loot, without having to jump through too many hoops.

I love it. One of my characters is a regal Redguard moonsugar smuggler, or a smuggler of all sorts. His business tactics are ruthless as he will sabotage a whole town's economy just to get better business. This game mechanic really lets me role play the way I want to. It's a great feature.

I think it'll add a little bit to the game, but i'm not expecting much. The devs aren't hyping it up as some amazing, in depth feature... so nor should we.

Economies are my favorite parts of many games. I love being able to buy, sell, open trade routes, do quests to make sure trade caravans run smoothly, find new supplies for traders, etc. I've never seen an RPG pull it off effectively, however. It's usually just buying and selling. I guess it's the old SimCity or Caesar III player in me. I love to watch the cities improve/degrade/change over time. It reinforces that the character is part of a bigger world and that actions have consequences for me.

I wonder if you can make money by traveling around and reselling stuff. :) I am actually pretty excited about this. Dragons can actually ruin a city's economy, so it's a good idea to protect them.

As long as I can one day become powerful enough to claim the town.

And do the same with all the other towns.

And take dominance of all of Skyrim, uniting the whole region into my own kingdom.

Then I don't mind xD

Yeah ,it's going to be interesting to see as to what extent they have done this. Could bite us in the bum. I wonder if the people in that town would dislike you more,if they indeed knew it was you that caused it. :)

Definitely a fun addition. I wonder if there will be quests between warring villages, where you have to sabotage the mill and such.

Don't care too much, but it's a cool addition that adds some substance to the believability of the world.

I hope it will be better than Fable 2's buy-in-bad-city-sell-in-good-city-get-rich-quick system. Hate that game. I care somewhat about the town economies, but it's not something that I would be upset about being absent.

Imagine it like this:

I've some chicken wings with me! Great! But there are too many! What I'm going to do with 200 chicken wings?

Sell it, of course!
But I'm not going to earn too much money... They are too cheap... :(

Then you go to a town, kill every chicken, and the prices will go up!

Then you sell your chicken wings, at a very high price...

If it something like this, it's great!

Another thing that would make sense...

I've 200 chicken wings... The price is 20 golds per chicken wing...
I'll sell 10 of them... The price will go down... 19 golds per chicken wing...
I'll sell more... The price will keep going down...

And the same thing if you buy stuff...
By buying arrows for exemple...
Each time you buy X arrows, the price changes... (Higher price)

LOL, it is 5 gold bounty per chicken if there are any witnesses.

I care a lot but I don't believe a second it will be more complex than "there is a spot to destroy, you do it, you gain more money from importing XXX" so I'm not really excited about it. If there really was an economic section in the game however, I would be a great admirer. Being a merchant (I mean an interesting to play merchant) is one of the possibility which lacks in the TES.

Yeah lol... But it'd be weird to kill with witnesses, if you're going to sell things for them later haha

I'm very excited. Once I become rich I'll see if I can cause mass inflation of septims in the local province.

I think one of the reasons why I'm skeptical is because it sounds a little like Fable to me. I hope they didn't hear this idea during the development of Fable and decide they'd implement it without deciding if it was really worth fleshing out. Needless to say, the less Skyrim is like Fable, the more I'm going to enjoy it. So many ideas get thrown into video games even though there really isn't a passionate feeling of game improvement. Some times just too much money is sunk it a project that they figure it's just too expensive to abandon or omit.

Sorry Fable fans...if there are any out there.

But I will agree that the more nuanced it is the more I'll enjoy it. A simple system that is extremely easy to manipulate won't be fun. A system that is too adaptive to manipulate won't be fun either. They have to find that sweet spot that in some way lets us improve our experience. We'll see what happens.

I like the fact that there's economics but will my thief care? Probably not.. or maybe he will? Maybe he will use that to his advantage while selling stolen goods so long as I don't have to fence EVERY FORK.

I'm interested if it is more than an isolated effect. Like if significantly boosting the economy of a town increases its political and cultural influence in the region. Skyrim shall henceforth be known as Greater Winterhold.
