Does anyone else miss weapon degradation?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:37 pm

I miss weapon degradation.

It would have been nice to have a "realistic hardcoe" option at the beginning of the game like in "Fallout New Vegas" but to allow players the option to have degradable weapons and food/sleep requirements. I know its not some peoples cup of tea but once you get used to such added complexity its really not that bad.

I'm going to say yes and no, I don't miss oblivion style degredation but if fixing your weapons and gear was as simple as fallout then I could deal with it. Especially with a hardcoe mode involved and a properly trained smithy.

I am not missing it no, having to carry all those repair hammers around was a pain. But i suppose it was more realistic to have weapons and armour degrade with the knock you take. My smithing skill is stupidly high as it is just from getting rid of all those hides i get when i kill things, i can only imagin how many level jumps there would be if i was fixing stuff too <_<

Putting something in quotation marks doesn't really invalidate it. Sorry. Just because you'd rather have a much simpler, sword-version of Call of Duty, doesn't mean it should be that way for everyone.

lol this forum has quite an obsession with that game. I'm sorry you think carrying a bunch of dead weight and spamming a button a few times after every other fight makes things complex.

Honestly, I do not miss weapon degradation. It only really served as busy work in the first place, to justify the "smithing" skill at the time. Now we actually have a smithing skill though, so if there WAS ever going to be degrading weapons, it should have been in this game, but not the others.

I don't get the obsession either maybe people just use that game because it's really popular. Never played it but from what I've seen the games are nothing like just one is more popular than the other and trying to bash people for playing certain games is wrong and childish, the mods should start coming down on those people.

Realistically, the combat in this game has degraded to "spamming a button a few times," if you want to use that anology. I think having items slowly lose their effectiveness and keeping them maintained using a special skill made it fun. I'm sorry you need to apologize to random people.

It's the latest first person shooter out, and ergo, it's meant to have a different form of gameplay than a roleplaying game. However, people seem to think it needs to mirror that genre because they don't quite have an understanding of different forms of gameplay. I don't really see CoD bashing in my post, do you? I've actually been a fan of the Call of Duty series since the second one first came out. It was one of the first games I got with my Xbox 360 right after the console's launch. Having moderators "come down" on people just for having an opinion and making a comparison sounds like China or Nazi Germany to me. Glad the moderators so far are smarter than you think.

I didn't mean to say that you had bashed some people specifically but I have seen people that have been more rude about it. This isn't China or Nazi Germany but it is a message board where people should try and be civil towards each other, and stopping people from coming down on others who would bash for playing certain games or on certain systems would be a start, I hope I don't come off as trying to tell mods what to do just pointing out things i have noticed.

HELL NO. I love not having hammers waste space and having to fix everything before fights. It was a big time waster and finally we can just play and enjoy. No more tedious repairs.

My bad, man; I misread your post. If someone's being a [censored] about it, then yeah, the mods need to do something about it. I definitely hate people who are elitist against FPSers and try to bunch Halo/CoD players as being less intelligent. I played Fallout/Fallout 2/Arcanum/Gothic 2, damn it. I just like shooting stuff, too, sometimes.

On Topic: Repair could be something added to a 'hardcoe' mode proposed in another thread.

I'm not making any anology, I described very literally what repairing was. "Oh my weapon's breaking, better use my bag full of hammers on it 23 times." Boy that was thrilling.

This is also an unrelated issue to combat, which isn't and has never been terribly deep anyways, but you're at least moving and evading, maybe even throwing a block in if that's your thing. Unless you're for some reason actually just standing there swinging, have fun with that I guess. No matter, I give my opinion and you give yours, I don't particularly care and actually have a game to get back to so I'm done with this back and forth. Maybe you'll find a mod to work out your urge to hammer things with.

I mean seriously, it would make Smithing so much more useful. And for as realistic as things are in Skyrim our weapon and armor do not degrade? Cmon Bethesda!

Ya know, a little bit. I always thought degradation added an interesting dimension to the game. I was hoping to see it again, but also hoping that it would happen quite a bit slower. And that there would be interesting ways to counteract the effects (super smithing, repair spells, I don't know...whatever).

Not everyone needs a thrill every second. The Elder Scrolls were traditionally roleplaying games. You played a role and enjoyed numerous facets of being a fighter and adventurer, which added to immersion, complexity, and fun and gave you similar conundrums as what an adventurer might have. "Hm, that area has vampires. I better stock up on Cure Disease pots." "I like using broadwords, better work on my physical strength." "My sword hasn't been dealing the same damage. I should repair it." I know, some people have fun using their brain. It's bizarre.

Anyway, if you're done with this, I'm done.

Not really, never had a weapon break on me yet in any elder scroll games, repairs were cheap and really, it's a it of a chore, after every quest, visit the black smith, after exploring a dungeon visit the blacksmith, I think if memory serves me right weapon/armor degradation doesnt actually reduce the effectiveness of the weapon/armor.

The thing is, degradation would have a much bigger impact if it was like fallout 3 where 100% condition is not possible from npcs, but then again everyone would be forced to take black smithing so no

Hell no. I repaired my stuff so damned often I got sick of it in Morrowind and Oblivion and found mods to fix the need to fix my weps and armor... I certainly don't miss having to repair stuff in Skyrim.

No, item degradation does not make any sense in the short term.

I don't miss item degradation but it's your point that doesn't make any sense. Realistically one battle is all it takes to potentially ruin your gear, your armor can get dented, pierced or cracked, your sword can get nicked or shatter, your axe head could split... your bowstring could snap, etc...

I miss it, but I don't miss how it was done in Morrowind and Oblivion. It could be done better.

Letting weapon and armor improvements degrade would have been a good compromise. So only the "buff" degrades, but your weapon and armor will always be at least 100% effective.
