Does anyone else miss weapon degradation?

No, it was just another headache that added nil to the game.

Why should battleaxes, greatswords, bows or other weapons degrade? Its illogical...

Ok so when you use a knife in your kitchen it never dulls? sounds logical...

Nope. Weapon degradation was more annoying then anything, and I'm happy to see it go.

I mean seriously, it would make Smithing so much more useful. And for as realistic as things are in Skyrim our weapon and armor do not degrade? Cmon Bethesda!

Yes, i miss it. In previous games weapon degradation forced you to plan ahead before going into some bold hack-and-slash adventure.
I understand most console players prefer simple hack-and-slash, but i still miss this decision about how many repair hammers i should carry - based on my Smithing capabilities - to keep my weapons effective during such an adventure ;)

I see entropy has few fans in this thread.

While it was exaggerated in Oblivion too much, I find the idea of get it once and your character is set for life equally wrong. I can't imagine having a sword or mace that's going through what my character is putting them through without needing a touch up at the grindstone now and then. Having them always in mint condition is as silly to me as those guns in the old westerns that never ran out of bullets.

Yes and the indefinite bow string draw should be a perk.

The problem they have is that they completely revamp entire systems, then make changes based on the problems in the previous incarnation of the system.

In Oblivion, you find an iron sword that deals 5 dmg, it does 5 dmg until it suddenly snaps in half.
In Skyrim, you find an iron sword that deals 5 dmg, you upgrade it to deal 100 dmg, then murder stuff indefinitely.

I'd like it if the iron sword's 100 damage degraded back down towards 5 dmg over time. It doesn't have the 'sack of hammers' problem, and it's also more realistic than either of the explored alternatives.

While I wouldn't mind having to take care of my weapons after extended use, the rate at which equipment degraded in oblivion was far too swift.

Maybe if after a certain number of uses (weapons) or after taking so many hits (armor) the quality of the weapon degrades from the higher qualities like fine and above and can go past the baseline to bad qualities like worn, poor and then finally breaking. Granted to decline a stage I would rather the uses/hits be around 2,500 to 10,000 (example values) give or take depending on the current quality as having something shatter after a handful of encounters was what I hated about equipment damage in oblivion.

^^ This.

It does seem odd that my weapons NEVER wear out, or that my bow never breaks, or whatever. I think it could be done - in other words, there's an x percent chance that, during a fight, your weapon breaks. Then you have to grab someone else's. That would be realistic. When the fight's over, you take it to a forge to fix it. Other elements could include:

1. a much slower rate of degradation.

2. repairs could only be made at a forge.

3. eventually the weapon/armor would wear out entirely, but maybe could be use for raw materials.

4. cheaper weapons wear down and break faster.

5. Any improvements would prolong the life of the weapon.

All of this could be implimented using the code Bethesda has given us right now.

Exactly my view. Weapons degrade and you should repair them on occasion to keep them effective.

Although I do agree that a badly implemented item health is and would've been more of a nuisance than a desireable feature, I can't help but think how much even a halfdecent system of such would've helped to balance out the smithing improvements and enchanting, as well as offering another layer of depth to the system. So yeah, I do miss it -- not the way it was in Oblivion, but an improved version.

Allow me to quote many from this thread:
"No"
Because it's a waste of time which is the reason Bethesda gave for leaving it out. A good reason from smart people.

Yes I miss it, but what I don't miss is the Oblivion/Fallout style of weapons/armor degradation.

A change in the way weapons and armor degrade was necessary because they degraded entirely too quickly. Bethesda, in their infinite wisdom, decided a knee jerk reaction to this issue was a better way to go. Instead of actually fixing the problem, they removed it altogether.

For some reason this made me imagine if Fallout's system was in Skyrim. One broken longsword + another broken longsword = fixed longsword? SWEET!

The whole idea of weapon degradation was to not have the same weapons all the time and basically find the cheap way out. But it's not realistic and for game developers it's not easy to think of some middle ground

I don't miss OB rate of degradation. If that was toned down a little bit a lot, I wouldn't mind it for Skyrim, but I hated how fast your weapons/armor broke in OB.

It is extremely easy to think of a middle ground.
As for not realistic, entropy is the most certain law of physics.

I miss everything from Oblivion except lockpicking. I don't really mind repairing my armours. I loved repairing my stuff and making them better with my hammers. :P

How often in movies or real life do we see people tending their weapons? Pretty much every time they're done using them!
