Does anyone else miss weapon degradation?

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:29 pm

I mean seriously, it would make Smithing so much more useful. And for as realistic as things are in Skyrim our weapon and armor do not degrade? Cmon Bethesda!

I like it. I already find myself spending way too much time in Whiterun emptying my bags, decorating my house, etc. Weapon repair would be one more thing to do. I already have to re-enchant it. :P (not complaining, I like doing that)

I'm as hardcoe as you can get, but honestly, this particular point is not one I'm really missing.
Unless it was HUGELY toned down, but having to repair your gear after each fight (and sometimes wishing I could do it DURING a fight) was rather bothersome.

Yes and no.
I miss the idea of weapon degradation, but not the reality of it.

I wouldn't mind seeing it back, but at a very, very slow rate. And fixable via the forge with 1-of-whatever-it's-made-of.

No, item degradation does not make any sense in the short term.

Why should battleaxes, greatswords, bows or other weapons degrade? Its illogical...

If placing item on the workbench/grindstone for a little while was all that was needed, then sure. But carrying around a bunch of repair hammers? No thanks.

I keep opening my inventory to check my item durability and then sighing in disappointment when I remember items have godmode. They should have improved on the old system and incorporated it into the new blacksmithing system. Instead of item improvements (fine, superior, exquisite) being permanent, they should have charges just like enchanted weapons that when worn out have to be refreshed at the blacksmith. No need for armor breaking in every fight, just realistic degrading from usage. I think that would also help balance out how powerful Blacksmithing is compared to other skills.

hell no, that was so annoying. it basically forced everyone to be an armorer even if it wasn't a selected skill so that you could keep your gear in useful condition.

^ This. It should also be fixable with ingots, and weapons of similar material, you could have a perk for that.

Also you should be able to make arrows using BS.

No , item degradation was horrible.
Nothing was worse then having to drag 20+ repair hammers simply because u wanted to explore and having to stop exploring because u ran out of them. Especially with their low durability (both the repair hammers and the equipped items) wich made u wonder if your gear wasnt made out of bubblewrap.

Visual armor/weapon degradation would be a nice touch, but it affecting stats is just 'NO'.

Yes I miss it, but what I don't miss is the Oblivion/Fallout style of weapons/armor degradation.

A change in the way weapons and armor degrade was necessary because they degraded entirely too quickly. Bethesda, in their infinite wisdom, decided a knee jerk reaction to this issue was a better way to go. Instead of actually fixing the problem, they removed it altogether.

I feel like the improvements that smiths make to weapons (fine->Superior->exquisite) should fade over time and need to be re-applied, but I don't generally want all of my stuff to break.

Hell no. Very happy with the removal. One of the most mundane things I've had to do in a game.

While I wouldn't mind having to take care of my weapons after extended use, the rate at which equipment degraded in oblivion was far too swift.

Maybe if after a certain number of uses (weapons) or after taking so many hits (armor) the quality of the weapon degrades from the higher qualities like fine and above and can go past the baseline to bad qualities like worn, poor and then finally breaking. Granted to decline a stage I would rather the uses/hits be around 2,500 to 10,000 (example values) give or take depending on the current quality as having something shatter after a handful of encounters was what I hated about equipment damage in oblivion.

Funny thing, Just last week I remember thinking.. "oh crap.. I probably need to repair my armor, I bet it's getting low." Then realized that wasn't necessary. I just got used to it in the last games.
