Does anyone else play Ironman Dead is dead?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 12:51 am

I was level 13 and ran into a protectron that was not legendary. Well the guy was duel wielding double rail guns it seems like and punched through my fully repaird T-45 B like it was wet paper. Now I have to start again! I don't know why but I have to play RPG's and CRPGs this way...I am sadistic :(

it was probably a protectron nurse or medic or whatever they can instant kill at a low lvl like yours and i'm a level 48 and they still give me trouble.

I do it occasionally, but usually only after a few normal playthroughs to help spice things up a bit. I don't think I'd ever do it on my first playthrough; that's too much for me :P

That sounds pretty rough. I've never seen a protectron actually be dangerous yet. Heck, I've only actually seen one or two attack me at all, most of the ones I encounter are still in their pods and I just disable them. Assaultron's, though. When their head starts to glow you just gotta run. That thing has one-shotted me every time I've gotten hit by it (no PA).

Nope, I refuse to play Iton man unless the game actually supports it.

Otherwise its too artificial for me.

Well if you delete your saves after you die its the same thing no? What do you mean by artificial? not being a jerk or anything just making conversation.

Sounds like a massive waste of time for no reason whatsoever.

No offense taken Ill gladly explain.
Let's take the latest xcom game for example. I play that game exclusively on ironman mode because it is built into the game. Because the game supports that option it means there are very few times the game will unfairly kill you without giving you any way to avoid it.

Now let's look at a BGS game, there is no option for it in game so the Devs have included areas that are meant to kill you the first time till you learn the tricks.

Playing Ironman mode in games like this is the same as reloading saves, it just involves repeating lots of early game content and takes much longer. You still will run into a suprise protectron that can some how 1 hit you despite being twice his level and learn the tricks to avoid him next time, just like if you reloaded a save. The only difference is that you are artificially forcing yourself to repeat content.

Furthermore attempting to play Ironman in a game that does not support it feels like I am playing pretend.

I hate artificially limiting myself in same way to make up a challenge, ie limiting my carry weight to 100 lbs, not using healing items, only using one type of weapon.

I hope that explained it.

I would probably after a couple of play through. I need to get used to fallout 4 for a while lol and it'd probably be almost impossible to get through a full play through of dead is dead on any difficulty above normal..

I normally play "Dead is Dead" in FONV and Skyrim, and I'm sure will go that route with FO4 eventually. It just aint gonna happen though untill I have some idea of what I'm doing, and what I'm facing.

Not yet. There is too much about the game that I don't understand.

Fallout 3 was rather easy to do Dead is Dead, even from the beginning, but the simpacks worked differently and so on. I haven't really been able to evaluate how hard this game is yet. My primary difficulty right now is my own ignorance of how the game works.

Like many here I play for a while until I feel I'm more in tune to the game then I play Dead is Dead, started that back with Morrowind, there is, or was a site just for that where you listed your dates. Never bothered with that I just feel if I die in these sort of games I find it very hard to load an older save and just keep going. so I just delete the Save Folder. There is as someone else said a type of learning curve with any new Beth game so it can take a while to get used to how they spring some of their surprises on you but this is Beth and they do not often come out with many real new surprises anymore. Skyrim played 6000+ hours, lost count on Dead is Dead re-starts two years ago, He He He TBH though I'm that strict in my ways of playing like that I'll even have trouble carrying on because I stumbled over a cliff face in a blinding snow storm, Oops

PS: Yes I agree FO3 was easy for Dead is Dead, so was Morrowind once you knew the game, not so good with Skyrim? I prefer Elder Scrolls but play better in Fallout?

I suppose this won't make much sense to you guys, but...

Currently if my character gets killed in FO4, I just reload and go on differently. However... if my character gets stuck in an inescapable death scenario, I just can't bring myself to go to an earlier save. My first character for instance was attempting to elude a sentry bot just wanting to get out of the building and the area he was in. So, exited the door snetry bot started hammering him, turned and went back through the door, and the sentry bot bet him in and killed him two seconds later. The autosave reloaded with my character outside the door the first time, and no matter what I did, I couldn't escape. I then tried to see if there was any way to use the second autosave to get back through the door, but no matter what I did he was dead in seconds.

No, I wasn't playing Dead is Dead, but still I couldn't in good conscience reload the character from a much earlier save and go on, so I deleted him. It just wouldn't have been the same, you know?

Whilst I like the idea of DID I think there's other ways to get just as much enjoyment out of a hardcoe play through. Daylight and Mordor did this well whereby you lose XP/stats etc. This way there's a real downside to dying other than simply reloading.

Certainly not on my first playthrough! Maybe later when all the gimpy controls have been fixed and I actually know what I'm doing.

No problem, if BGS made a iron man mode or a hardcoe mode I would play the heck out of it.

The concept seems fun, but I just cant get any fun out of choosing to limit myself. It is like choosing not to hit what I am aiming at to try and simulate my character being surprised or scared.

Playing this game Ironman style would probably kill any desire to play it after maybe two tries at it.

"Oh good...a grenade got me...Gotta start over...Again..."

"Oh great, I got murderfaced by a buncha synths with laser rifles..."

It's just not fun to me to have to start all over. Like what am I trying to prove, backtracking all the way through the intro and back through the game to try and get back to where I was?

I got that when I was playing New Vegas modded. Everything was going well, then one day I start it up...Explosion flash of light, and I drop dead.

Yup, was extremely intense. Then I stopped playing DayZ.

Seriously though, permadeath for a Bethesda game? No way, unless there are mods that change progression from being a level grind. Too many bugs and weird variables that keep it from being a fair experience.

Have zero interest in it whatsoever. Its also fairly pointless for me because my favorite part of these types of games is the beginning so I am always re-rolling anyways. I don't need yet another reason to start over. :P

Also the way the game is designed it really limits how far you can get. If you are playing on hard or very hard its not uncommon to run across enemies that are way tougher than you and I have died quite often from multiple NPCs chucking molotovs and grenades at me all at once. If you are caught in a back alley street then you really don't have any option but to run and heal yourself and hope that no one shoots you in the back as you skitter away.

What I am looking forward to are the mods that replace death with being imprisoned. Skyrim had a mod like this where you would "wake up" as a prisoner of a necromancer or vampire or something. I would love a Fallout version where you woke up as a prisoner of the Gunners or Super Mutants and you have to escape and get your gear back. I really wish more games did this by default.
