Does anyone seriously want motion control in Skyrim?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 3:46 am

Motion control gaming hasn't shown its place in the core gamer's market yet. When/if it does, these polls might be a little bit more balanced if not opposite.

It'd be cool to have head tracking (like Forza 4) integrated into Skyrim, but full on motion control might be too much.

I think the Kinect is a good idea, and far better than the Wii thing and that new PS3 thing (PS3's thing is a complete knockoff of Wii. Kinect at least did something kinda different)

Don't wanna run into a wall trying to escape a dragon.

I agree.

No. But only because i have never seen motion control done in a way i think would fit the Elder Scrolls. I wouldn't have anything against it if it was done right and was optional.

This could be the biggest landslide in a poll I have ever seen.

... and bloody right too there should be - No Motion Control, No Guns, No Level Scaling and No Fast Travel - These four things should stay away from Skyrim

I only see two posts about this topic, this one being one of them.

I vote no, not because Motion Control is worthless, but because it's too late in development to add it (The game would need to be built around motion controls from the start), and the Xbox 360 lacks the power to handle its own Motion Control system.

No.
Because i'm sane.
ish...

motion control in games doesn't even work, atleast not in any i've seen, and we don't all have the required greenscreens for Kinects full functionality (Or even, a relatively clear, pale room.)

I'm not familiar with how motion control actually works since I've never used it.

But, I would love to have foot activated controls (rather than mouse) with which I could "run" with my right foot and "jump" with my left. It would free my hands up for a lot of other things, and my feet aren't doing anything else anyway.

Everyone who claims they want motion control in Skyrim: Put your money where your mouth is, and post a YouTube video of you running in place, pretending to swing a sword, block, throw imaginary spells, and so on for at least 2 hours straight. Talk is cheap, show us that you'll actually use it.

Half of those items are not like the other two.

Fast-travel and Level Scaling have always been part of The Elder Scrolls series. Without fast-travel, the game world is forced to be much smaller than it otherwise could be: Morrowind had only 25% the area of Cyrodiil, despite what many claim. And Level Scaling is what keeps the game challengingly fun, especially some quests. Oblivion just did it wrong (And my favorite mod to fix it keeps the level scaling in place, but eliminates the worst aspects of it).

Running in place is a poor implementation of motion control. An anologue stick is still best for getting from point A to point B. I think the ideal motion-control system would be Kinect and a Dual-shock controller split in half, ergonomically recalibrated, and held in each hand. Best of both worlds: Motion capture for greater avatar control (Especially in combat), and the Dual-Shock controller's abstraction functionality.

And for the video... have you not seen "Star Wars Kid"? Joking aside, it wouldn't be as hard or tiring as you seem to think it will, because video games are a virtual reality... the human brain accepts the world presented in a video game as the "real" one, and our actions to control the character become extentions of the processes our brain uses to control our own body. Learning to control your character in a video game is exactly like learning to walk.

I am fully aware that Level scalling and fast travel already exist in the game... I just wish they didn't

Maybe however you are right and level scalling done right can work, I don't know though becase I never played the Mod you are referring to... hopefully Skyrim does it right

And how would we implement switching among multiple control schemes? Get up off the couch when you're going to fight, sit back down and comfortably use your dual-shock for the "non-motion" parts? Or would it be easier to stand the entire time, but only dance and arm-wave when in combat? Seriously, I'm not seeing how any of this translates into fun here.

And for the video... have you not seen "Star Wars Kid"? Okay, this feels rather like a straw man. Once we've knocked the straw man over and learned to use the controller, are we or are we not still standing up pantomiming game actions a large portion of the time, thus making "do you want to stand up and wave your arms for hours on end" a valid concern?

Or are we abstracting things like swinging weapons so far that the "motion controller" becomes basically a nonphysical normal controller, which then begs the question "why even bother?"

Wow, this is a landslide poll right up there with the likes of not wanting guns in TES.

I think it would be fun to have, but I don't have a game console and I don't want them to take time away form development to do that. Maybe if someone made an adaption after release that would be fine.

4.12% voting Yes as of this post.

That's still low enough to be ignored, so commercially it would be a bad idea.

I'm gonna go with no.

Motion controls need specific games, they can't just be tacked on existing ones.

I like my Playstation Move a lot but I'm not sure due to the long gaming sessions I'll be doing with Skyrim if I want to be using my Move for hours on end. My arms would be way sore.

i would like it as an option that you can turn Motion control support on and off

i would only like Motion control if i can just sit down without being hyper

but i don't really care

but like treyster said it will take Dev time and then we probably need to wait longer Edit: so it's nooooooooooooo

In the future, this kind of thing could be awesome with motion controls. But the technology needs to be adequately advanced for it to work. Currently, I don't think it is.
