Does anyone use scrolls or staffs?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 4:07 am

Ive played many mage characters, and Ive never been able to integrate scroll use into my mage gameplay. They arent powerful enough for being one-time use. Wouldnt it be better if scrolls were used for unique and more powerful incantations? What would be some good ways to improve the scrolls concept?

Staffs seem more useful than scrolls, but still, they cast the same spells as the ones you will be using. Plus they need to be recharged pretty frequently. I had an idea that staffs could be enchanted with a three spell smart cast combo. For example when used it casts a flame cloak, incinerate and conjure ebonyflesh at the same time. It would make it more useful than normal spellcasting and make it worth recharging. Any other ideas?

My mage characters have rarely used either scrolls or staves. My Oblivion Mages who went through the University (not all of them did) carried their staves. Their staves felt a bit more personal in that game. But they didn't actually use them.

To be honest, few of my characters, magically inclined or not, have used scrolls in any of the Elder Scrolls games. My Mages haven't needed them and my non-mages often don't trust magic and so refuse to have anything to do with the devices and implements of magic, including scrolls. I have yet to find a way of working scrolls or staves into my (admittedly peculiar) style of roleplaying.

But, who knows. I may yet make a character who regularly uses scrolls or staves. You never know. The inspiration just hasn't hit me yet.

I used the staff from the University in Oblivion because, like the person above said, it felt more personal.

I used scrolls quite a bit in Morrowind, they just seemed more useful if you weren't a Mage than they do in other game.

Other than that no, rarely if ever do I use either. Typically just sell them all.

My one and only ever battlemage character,Lucien Darkstar, has used staves on occasion but has found the regular hand-casted spells to be more effective during combat....he has chests full of unused scrolls as they are just redundant as far as spells go...... :snoring:

I have made several against-the-grain characters. During my current playthrough I have tossed around a similar character type. Granted, the use of mods like PERMA assists in this endeavor immensely in that scrolls can be inscribed from spells that you know using the added enchanter's quill. Along with the staff enchanter, the ability to craft your own scrolls supports a character not unlike the random encounter of the young Nord who was inspired to magic yet remained quite inept.

I feel I can make such a character that will never have more than the base magicka pool and his or her entire arcane prowess is sustained solely through the use of script and stave.

As for general use with mage characters, the staff of Magnus and scrolls have came in handy on the occasions where the magicka pool has been depleted.

I have even used conjuration staves leading into a battle leaving a complete pool to draw other spells from.

I play almost exclusively mages and to me scrolls are like most potions. Sold.

I have not yet played the character.( long,as I had some CDT issues at the time) but I have the back story set for a Dwemer scholar, she will use scrolls and staffs and a Dagger only.

I have an experimental low-level character (Lola, the Low-Life Khajiit) who uses no "skills" for fighting, to avoid leveling. So, in fighting, she uses only fists, shouts, scrolls, and staves. She's currently at level 2, and has done the Main Quest up to Diplomatic Immunity. She has killed several dragons, including a wild fight where she had to fight two of them at once.

I started using them from the day i stopped using any kind of crafting. Now i constantly try to buy them from the holds wizards and i won't start a difficult quest without having scrolls of summon atronach or firestorm.

Staves on the other hand not so much because i need every soul gem for my weapons so i usually sell them when they are empty.

I haven't used scrolls at all, but with my current character I've been using a staff. I only use it when I get into a situation where I need the extra firepower because I'm low on magic or in a tough spot. I'm trying to use only magic for everything so that I can get all the skill levels to climb.

I tend to collect a lot of scrolls but don't end up using them much of them. Usually I only use them in an emergency scenario.

As for staffs, the staff of chain-lightning is a godsend for me especially when being charged at by a group of vampires (I hate being turned into a vampire), also carry the staff of fireballs, dragon priest staff, Hevnorak's staff, staff of ice storms and staff of ice spears.

Apart from summon atronach scrolls and perhaps Firestorm and Blizzard I find most scrolls to be useless. I mean what good is a scroll of Mayhem if it caps at lvl 12, it's a master level spell and becomes useless after 5-10 hours of playtime when you leveled past the cap. Illusion perks will affect those but I am of the opinion that those scrolls should be a boon to any character since it's a very limited resource. Same goes for Illusion and Restoration staves, missed opportunity IMO.

Not fond of either scrolls or staffs in this game. I don't play mage-types at all, stealthy warrior (if that's not contradictory) with shouts being pretty much all the "magic" I use.

I smiled when I read this title. Staffs I use rarely, the exception being Sanguine Rose. Scrolls, though... On every character I always keep at least one Summon Storm Atronauch scroll in their inventory, just in case. I smile because I have used exactly zero of them in all my hours of playing :)

My mage characters may use staffs in the early to mid game as they grow their own magicka pool to a useful level. Usually, I just do not worry about staffs, though.
