Does Bethesda listen to the community?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:32 am

I have been a fan of Elder Scrolls ever since Morrowind came out but I never checked the forums until recently now. So I don't know if they listen or not. I heard that they did with Oblivion, but I just want to know if they will be listening to the community for this game.

Thanks

Bethesda is very interactive with their community, which is one of the reasons they are my favorite developer. Sometimes they come on here and post and chit chat and what not. So yes, they do listen to the community.

Oh I really think they do. You can see some developers eyeing some threads from time to time.

What would be of a company if they didn't listen to their fans?

Of course they don't make decisions solely based on the forum feedback (and it would be ridiculous to expect it), but they do listen.

You see them reading the forums (list of members at the bottom of each topic) from time to time. The night before the VGAs there were two checking out the Speculation Thread. And yes sometimes they post.

I think it was Todd Howard also said that he wished the community could see how much Bethesda's community manager (your name escapes me - forgive me) pesters him over little things he reads on here.

They are listening. It's just that most of the ideas on here are rubbish and wouldn't have any chance of making it into the game anyway

They very much do.

It's a big reason they are awesome.

A lot of Oblivion was simply a response from criticisms from Morrowind, and I can expect some of the same for Skyrim.

Which is a big reason why I believe this game is going to rock my friggin socks off.

There are two: Nick Breckon and Matt Grandstaff (Gstaff)

That's interesting, I had never read that before :) This is why I love Bethesda.

It feels like the listening process is much more reactionary than it is preventative. Here's to hoping that development is not too far rooted yet.

We're listening to you right now.

We know when you are sleeping. We know when you're awake. We know when you've been bad or good -- we change your ending depending on it.

Bethesda listens very closely, although they seem to be more interested in comments and criticisms of their games rather than abstract suggestions. The expansions for Morrowind and Oblivion are a good example of this as they seem to be highly influenced by comments made about Morrowind and Oblivion. Oblivion incorporates tons of oft-requested features.

At this point in Skyrim's developement making general suggestions probably won't have much impact as much of the gameplay and gameworld has been made already. I know Morrowind's developement was influenced by fan comments (originally Khajiit and Argonians weren't playable races) but it was also announced much earlier.

We're listening to you right now.

Anyone who was on the forums after Oblivion's release and saw the major complaints and then went on to play Shivering Isles can testify to the fact that Bethesda does indeed listen to their fans.

And Morrowind -> Bloodmoon.

We don't always get what we want, but I suspect that's largely because we don't all want the same thing.

They probably do listen to feedback and other stuff. I don't think they'll act on something unless its like "huh now thats interesting maybe I'll bring it up at the next meeting".

So is this a confirmation of multiple endings for Skyrim? :ninja:

This. I mean, we aren't even paid, and we come up with some pretty awesome ideas. You'd think a "professional" would know that psychic guards are incredibly stupid.

One can only hope they've been giving some of the ideas a fair hearing. =/

I also hope they've listened to the community's issues with Oblivion, primarily regarding:

  • The overly transparent leveling system (if they go with something like they did in Fallout 3 I think it should be fine for the most part).
  • The removal of certain weapons, which honestly wasn't too surprising given the new physics system. Hopefully now that they've had a bit more experience they can try and re-implement things like spears and throwing stars.
  • Speaking of physics, stuff shouldn't be flying off a table just from the player lightly bumping into it. lol
  • A need for more varied and imaginative environments-Oblivion was very pretty but everything started to blur together after awhile.
  • A less cliche fantasy plot where the player is actually actively involved in the "final battle".
  • More customizable armor and clothing. Perhaps even the ability to "save an outfit" and quickly switch between them-allowing for more in-depth role playing, for instance wearing clothing in towns and armor out in the world and of course in dungeons.
  • It should feel a little (or even a lot) less "dumbed down for console gamers".

If there's a new engine involved it'd be awesome if it provided seamless transitions from world map -> towns and even exteriors -> interiors. It'd be totally awesome to have a huge nearly seamless world with little to no loading times. I think that's partly a memory issue but it could be potentially overcome by programing the engine to load up the environment "in real time" as the player is moving around. I'm still not sure that's entirely possible, especially for consoles which have significantly less RAM (perhaps some loading times for consoles and low RAM computers but reduced or even removed for computers with more RAM?). It'd be awesome if it's possible and its just something I'd personally like to see a game like TES try to do.

If they've been listening to the community then they've probably heard all the things I mentioned in the list before and I hope they've been taking that all into consideration when developing Skyrim.

Bethesda has fallen into a trend other developers seem incline to be in. In that they will listen to the "few" who complain about the current game, then make the next game according to that while ignoring the millions who loved said previous game. But its like these developers only listen "once" then each sequel continues to be further dumbed down.

If I were them, I certainly wouldn't. There's only so much "I demand a refund" you can take before you stop caring. I'd like to think the average person who posts that is like 12 but reality they're probably like 46

They listen to our criticisms and our ideas, and that feedback shows up in their game without any doubt.

Throw onto the fact they're a company that still gives us good expansions and mod tools in this current age of gaming, and you have one awesome Developer.
