Does Bethesda really understand what a gold mine a Fallout M

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 3:23 pm

WoW players are unsubbing in mass since the announcement of the Mists of Pandaria expansion - pandas. Need I say more. And, Bioware looks like they are going to have a very rocky start with a SWTOR launch. Probably, not as bad as Star Trek Online a few years ago, but almost as bad.

I would imagine a Fallout MMO would have a playing field at least 10 times larger than Fallout: New Vegas. The larger the area the better. Add the multiplayer element, and then there would just be a little more to do around the edges. Stuff like guilds, pvp, flashpoints (instances), etc. The MMO community is litterally screaming for an MMO with all the basic (CLASSIC) RPG elements of good games like Fallout and Skyrim V. The MMO community is sick of quests that require you to kill X amount of mobs.

I hear ya, but even you must admit that your self interest, and a company's interest are not always in tandem. Afterall, a company is in the business of generating a quarterly profit. A really good MMO out of the gate could generate gross sales in excess of 250 million dollars the first year. And, that estimate is very conservative. One million X $59 (cost of game), plus one million X $15 dollars a month (monthly sub) X 12 months. If they choose they could even go free to play, but I'd stay away from that model. People will gladly pay $15 a month for a high quality MMO. I forgot to mention that over half the game sales wouldn't even be standard edition at $59. A lot would be collector's edition $150, and deluxe editions $79.

Not really. About as interested as I am is a two player online thing, and even then only with people you're friends with. I can't stand multiplayer because half the people on multiplayer are trolls or bloody stupid. Sometimes both.

No, keep Fallout single-player games. Stay away from any kind multi-player.

We're not supposed to talk about that game here.

As for gold mine.. The MMO path is littered with dead games that never turned a profit. Every MMO promises to be the next WoW killer; and I can't think of a single one that I'd even call a moderate success - they all seem to either shutdown or go the free to play route.

Its hard to make money when you're giving it away - especially on something that costs as much to run as a MMO.

I have never read a negative opinion of the Fallout series games, or Skyrim V, in the 3 MMO forums I've reviewed. In fact, all I see are kudos about how well they are designed. Bethesda has a knack of publishing quality games. I tend to believe that in any endeavor (to include an MMO) their work would remain decidely above the littered field of MMO's that were disasters.

It is not due to that, there is an ongoing legal dispute between Bethesda nd Interplay (the makers of the MMO) which we are not allowed to discuss further.

Right, because ultimately it was YOUR world to play in. You throw 14 year old idiots screaming into their microphones any time you do something they dont like, trolls trying to PK you for the lulz, and general pants on head stupidity, the value of the game goes down. THAT is what the Fallout MMO would be. First the die hard fans would show up, then the wave of general public, then thats where the crapstorm comes in, the whiny majority that screams '____ NEDS TU BI DELCEE! ID BAI EET!' and soon enough the MMO says piss all to any semblence of the series and becomes crowd pleasing.

It's better as a single player game. MMO is basically Moron Multiplayer Orgy. No thanks.

I understand what you feel about the immature players. But guess what? You don't have to play with them, unless you like joining pickup groups (PUGS). I have leveled all my characters solo. I hardly ever pay attention to whispers, or tells, unless they are chat bubbles. You can even take those out if you are of a mind to. You need groups to get the really good gear, but the PVE sets of gear are quite close to the PVP sets. I too frown away from joining those immature players in vent, and don't like the way many of them ninja steal loot right from under your nose. After further thought, it might just be fine for Bethesda to make an MMO with a brand new name, that is not already a branded product. The only thing that really matters is that the game have all the classic elements of their most successful RPG games.

No thanks. Even if you avoid the idiots that populate MMO's, you'll still end up running into them and hearing them in the game's chat and more, you can never truly avoid them. Fallout is best left to being single player, strictly single player only games are few and far between as it is with this whole obsession with marketing to the COD/Halo crowd who find games like Fallout and the Elder Scrolls to be too complex for them to handle without multi player and being able to run around and scream into their mic a lot.

There are more than enough MMO's as it is anyway.
