Does Critical Thinking Belong in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Dec 09, 2009 12:36 am

I love the fact that they announced more puzzles in Skyrim. Of course there should be easy puzzles, but i've been wondering about how hard puzzles are going to get. Personally, I would want them hard, and i would probably pick the "Very Tough" option, but I feel like this would turn some people off, so i voted for the "feel rather accomplished" option, which i sort of associate with The Legend of Zelda, but i want there to be more types of puzzles than what Zelda has to offer.

I just want to see what other Skyrim fans are thinking when it comes to puzzles. I know some people just want to bash skulls. If quest markers are any indication of the direction they are going, It seems to me like they more concerned about mass appeal, and ease.

I voted "very tough" but I was stuck between that and "rather smart". Hard puzzles can be fun, but at the same time, it shouldn't become too large a focus of the game, since that's not really what it's about.

Challenging but entertaining if they can strike that balance. I have a feeling though that they will be rather simple, slot cube shape into cube hole to open gate affairs. :banghead:

Yes i was going to vote for very tough, but i started thinking puzzles that were too smart for the audience of Skyrim might be bad. of course what i think of "very tough" might be different than your view of it.

when i say the audience of skyrim, I mean what people expect when they play skyrim. I think the audience will want a really action-packed game, with rather limited cognitive elements.

Other.
I would like a mix of all of them. With the average being hard, but there should also be some fiendishly difficult ones and a few very simple ones.

pay attention to the question (and the OP). I'm asking what you want the hardest of the puzzles to be like

Most people will probably go to google to complete the puzzles in Skyrim but I think the puzzles will add a little more interest to the dungeons and make the rewards at the end feel a little more worth while. Its also nice to know that in this game all my problems can't be solved with a my axe......even though I like my axe

The hardest should be very tough and unlike in many adventure games, all shoud make sense and be logical.

I think it would be great to have some exceptionally difficult puzzles, I love solving a puzzle that took a lot of time and thought, but sometimes it can be annoying if you just can't find the solution :brokencomputer:
Then again, if you are really stuck on a puzzle, the answer is only a few clicks away on that thar internet.
So yeah, why not have a few really hard puzzles?

 i haven't thought of it like that. If the puzzles get too hard there is always the internet, so people can't really complain. I'm pretty close to changing my vote now to "very tough" or maybe even "Geniuses only"

Here's an example of a "geniuses only" puzzle:
http://www.business.illinois.edu/broker/iq.htm
^for those of you who like a challenge have fun. It's not too hard. I was able to solve it years ago, when i was a kid, and I'm no genius. Here's a backwards secret: hparg a ekam <-it really helped me.

Arena had some pretty tough riddles.

I'd say bring 'em on! Those who are not the sharpest tool in the shed (sometimes I do fall within this group, I admit!) can always just consult teh interwebz if they find themselves hopelessly stuck.

Interesting thread. Can't say i've seen this come up before.

I think what i'd want in terms of puzzles are fairly easy ones that take a minute or so to figure out...(like the difficulty of assassins creed puzzles) and then ranging from harder ones which might require you to write things down on paper to remember sequences.

Obviously the reward must be well worth it.

The trouble with puzzles is that I tend to replay the game a lot
1st time ok, replays repetitive. That puzzle in Honnleath in DAO got irritating, its not difficult, just slightly too complicated to remember off by heart
I just hope theres no puzzles involving recognising colours or musical tones since I'm part-colourblind and tonedeaf

I like them to be hard I like a really good puzzle. Most games like this have very easy puzzles that have almost no challenge to them. I want it to be challening but not annoying where they do not really give you any idea how to solve the puzzle. Hard like that is just annoying.

The problem with this poll is that the answers are subjective. What's rewarding for me might be genius only difficulty for someone else, and vice versa. Since Skyrim is not a puzzle game I'd rather they didn't focus on them too much: puzzles need a lot of effort to balance correctly and I don't want simpletons forced to consult the internet, robbing themselves of the reward.

That said, I voted for option 3. Something like Portal difficulty or slightly below suits me fine. Around world 3 of Braid is a good marker as well. They stump you for a while, and some might turn to the internet, but with enough application and experimentation one can work them out.

Anyone who plays the king's quest series (from the point & click era of adventure games) will fall into that group one time or another. Before the internet, they had to open up a "King's Quest Hint Hotline" to help people through those games. That kind of challenge made the games all the more interesting though.

I am hoping for atleast a few very difficult ones, but most should be intermediate.

My last puzzle game was way too easy(portal 2).

Somewhere between "I want to feel rather smart and accomplished after i finish these puzzles" and "They should be very tough. I want to use all my brain-power and Critical Thinking Skills" because I want it to be entertaining but at the same time challenging. Clever puzzles that aren't too tedious.

I want to see some real mind melters. Something you have to chew on and peice together over a few days. But, I don't see that happening, what with Bethesda having to cater towards the casual gamers who don't have the time or patience to waste time on a puzzle.

I would like to see some riddles based on Elderscrolls lore. The answers could be found by reading lots of the lore books that will hopefully be in the game. No Oblivion business where you open the book and the answer magically appears in a message box.

I'm going to vote other. As others have said there should be a mix of easy-very hard puzzles.

Anything that has to do with the main quest should progress from fairly easy at the beginning of the quest, to roughly medium-hard by the end of the main story.

Side quests, which are optional(duh), should range from medium all the way to extremely hard. I think the best rewards in the game should not only be in the 1-2 hour dungeons, but also have a few medium-extremely hard puzzles. Obviously with a mix inberween for different dungeons, the 15 min ones containing zero-one easy-medium puzzle. Maybe a few small dungeons with very hard.

As long as anyone is able to finish the main quest, I think optional quests should have some very challenging, WTF puzzles. Not everyone should be able to figure them out, because let's face it, the world is filled with dim witted idiots. These puzzles can just let them know they are for sure, lol jk dummies! :)

I can see the puzzles taking the average player ten minutes to figure out. They cant make them to hard, theres a thin line between a difficult puzzle and a vague one. This isnt an all out puzzle game like you guys seem to be talking about.
