I had this problem, but it gets much better once you reach level 50 in speech. THere's a perk that allows you to sell any item to any merchant...so you're not restricted. Plus, at either level 60 or 70 you can permanently invest 500 gold into their shops.

I've completed the Thieves Guild and the fence in there has 4k gold.
