Does FCOM live?

Post » Fri Sep 19, 2014 3:09 pm

I haven't seen anything about FCOM since 2009.

That's way closer to Oblivion's release date than now.

So ... you know.

>_>

I played it once, it was nothing short of absolutely amazing in every way.

and now I'm sitting here like...

Did people actually let this thing die? <_<

I'm no expert, but as far as I can tell FCOM was last updated in 2012, not 2009: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/1294-fcom-convergence/ And here is the FCOM release thread, which is still being maintained by Arkngt X, and whose last post was written just a few weeks ago: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1501789-rel-fcom-convergence/#entry23647666

But, regardless, I have to disagree about this idea of mods being "live" or "dead." That's not the way I think about mods at all. I believe that if a mod was good four years ago then that mod still good today. Notions of "live" or "dead" don't enter into my thinking.

I don't think mods are necessarily "better" simply because they are newer and I don't think a mod is "worse" simply because it is no longer being worked on. I use many mods that haven't been updated in years. They worked fine then and they work fine now.

What Pseron said. I am using an old version of Galerions unarmored version, for instance because I like it better than the newer version that has more "features". I also use several other mods that have not been updated in a while. Lack if updates may just mean the mod is a finished product. Look at Midas. It is the most endorsed Oblivion mod of all time on Nexus and it is still as good now as it was when it was last updated, which has been a while. No updates are needed, since it is complete. FCOM may be the same.

Although, when it comes to FCOM, there are some amazing new overhauls on the block (like Maskars and TIE) that are getting a lot of attention from users. That doesn't mean FCOM is dead but I think a lot of people are like me and just don't want to bother with something that has such complex installation instructions and that may have compatibility issues with other mods (FCOM had been reported not to work smoothly with Better Cities and Unique Landscapes, for instance). In contrast, Maskers is a breeze to install and compatible with everything out of the box. In ten or fifteen years when I retire and have lots of time on my hands, I will probably do an FCOM install and check it out. Right now I just want to play the game.

Still though FCOM is still discussed plenty on these forums. It is mentioned frequently and it has its own thread that is often appearing on the first page and I have recently read several regular posters mentioning that they use it. So it is in no way dead. But neither is it the only option to massively overhaul your game.
