Does having dozens of settlements become fortresses make sen

Post » Tue Mar 01, 2016 3:20 am

Hear me out, lore wise does this make sense.

Even with the BoS and MM and such, does it make sense for every settlement you come across to be a giant fortress of impenetrable doom to all?

Imo no, I personally make Sanctuary a safe haven for all to come to. It's one of the biggest settlements, is at an ideal location, and I make Red Rocket an outpost checkpoint to keep Sanctuary safe.

Next is the castle, I make that a huge fortress as it is a military outpost.

But I just can't bring my self to really work on and expand any other settlements, it just feels to wierd and lore breaking to go around and make every settlement into 100% happiness lands of wealth.

Anyone else feel this way?

I imagine that it is more lore breaking that settlement's have not been built up and armed themselves heavily in a world where you are surrounded by constant threats. Most of these settlements would get easily taken out by a wandering pack of feral ghouls never mind raiders or super mutants.

So yes fortifying them makes complete sense both in reality and in a video game.

Salvage from nearby military installations. Even if there where no turrets there would be fortifications of some sort, walls, and guard posts. Lets face it how did these people survive 210 years with nothing to protect them at all on there farms, like Abernathy farms.

If there's one thing I've learnt from RPGs, it's that no matter what dangers the people of the world face, they are quite happy to sit back and do diddly squat until a player character arrives. Kind of how the British sat around waiting for the Americans to sort out a plan of action in the film Independence Day.

Keep in mind that before the game was released, the idea put out by Beth was to build settlements to "clean up" the wasteland.
We are supposed to be bringing order; stability.

Though, it would be nice if there were some sign that we actually do this, other than happiness of the settlements.

Given the lack of dev built towns I've encountered so far, I think there's some onus on us to be filling out the wasteland with settlements. I agree that not every place should be a fortress of doom, which is why I try to build settlements that look makeshift, scrappy and quirky, so as to not look out of place in a Fallout setting. The many giant, floating military bases you can find on YouTube are impressive in scale and craft, but just seem unrealistic to me.
